Chapter 5 Chapter 5 — Final Thoughts & New Book Announcement
Another book has come to an end.
Even though I’ve already written several books—most of them completed—every time I reach the end, I still feel a sense of relief… along with a kind of emptiness.
For me, a book is like a journey. Whether rough or bumpy, smooth or full of ups and downs, everything can be felt along the way of writing.
Writing every day is actually no different from having a regular job—the only difference is that I work from home while others go to an office.
As time goes by, the initial enthusiasm for writing a book gradually settles into calmness, then dullness, and finally monotony. It’s something that every author must go through. Especially for someone like me who has written four or five books already—this has become a habit that I’ve slowly come to adapt to.
The reason I decided to write Sunflower after Jianghu was actually to make up for some regrets I had with True Sunflower Manual. I had expectations for this book. But in the end, I failed to fully take the readers’ tastes into account, which led to the poor results.
The biggest problem was probably the heroine being a rich second generation. Many readers dropped the book because of that. They felt that her family hiding the truth for twenty-five years was too much, and the heroine should’ve reacted more strongly—even severing ties.
To be honest, when I came up with that setting, I never expected so many readers to think that way. Perhaps this is the difference—what feels refreshing and exciting to an author might be a huge turn-off to readers. They get upset and quit the book outright.
Every day, the number of unfollows was more than the number of new followers. It chilled my heart. The total followers stayed around nineteen thousand, never managing to break twenty thousand. It’s similar to the situation with True Sunflower Manual, haha. The only difference is, that one didn’t even get signed, while Idol at least got a contract.
Even though the book flopped, at least it fulfilled a personal wish—I no longer have regrets about True Sunflower Manual.
Many people asked for side stories, but no matter how hard I think, I can’t come up with anything I truly want to write.
What could I write? Everything I wanted to say, I’ve already written. I can’t think of anything that needs to be added. Sometimes I wonder… if the heroine had been from a normal family instead of a wealthy one, the story would have gone in a completely different direction. Without the “concealment” plot point that readers hated, maybe the book would’ve become popular?
But there’s no medicine for regret in this world. Who would’ve thought—what I believed to be a great idea turned into a poison point, making the book lukewarm at best.
Regardless, this book is finished. A wish fulfilled, a knot untied.
As for side stories? Let fate decide. If someday I suddenly think of something worth writing, then I’ll write it. But who knows when that will be… After all, the side stories for Dominating the Jianghu still aren’t finished! Haha—been delayed for over a year. If only I had written them all at once back then.
Don’t ask me why the delay. It all boils down to one word: lazy.
Now that Idol is complete, next I’ll finish the Jianghu side stories (shouldn’t be many chapters left). After that comes the new book.
Here’s an early advertisement—because once Idol and Jianghu are marked complete, I won’t be able to upload more chapters there.
The new book has been in preparation for quite a while, slowly developing its setting and storyline.
Plot-wise, it may feel somewhat similar to Dominating the Jianghu, because the new book was originally an abandoned concept—the revised version became Jianghu. If Jianghu hadn’t already had 100k+ words written and I wasn’t too lazy to rewrite, then Jianghu wouldn’t be what it is today.
The new book’s background: soul transmigration. The protagonist travels to ancient times and becomes a newly-hired maidservant. So if you see a title with the word maid in sections like Trending or Interesting New Books, that’s probably Rabbit’s new book.
Being a maid is only the heroine’s starting identity. No need to worry—how could a modern person stay a maid forever?
The world setting is ancient fantasy: martial arts, Daoist arts, Buddhist magic, demons and spirits.
I really love A Chinese Ghost Story, so if anyone doesn’t quite understand the setting, they can use that as a reference.
To be honest, this will be my second time modeling a story after A Chinese Ghost Story—the first was The Demon-Subduing Chronicles, and now this one.
Of course, it’s only similar—there will be many differences as well.
Honestly, I think the new book is really good. I want to portray a brand-new heroine. I just don’t know if everyone will like her.
As I said earlier—my liking it isn’t enough. What matters is whether you like it.
So will it be popular? I don’t dare to say. I always write with the mindset that it might flop. No expectations, no disappointment. Just write well—that’s all.
I love writing—creating a world from words is fascinating.
But I’m picky—I can only write what I truly like. If I don’t like it, I simply can’t write it.
So if readers enjoy it too, that’s naturally wonderful—it means our tastes align.
In the future, based on the core theme of gender-change/transformation, I’ll write books in many different settings—xianxia, apocalypse, science fiction, western fantasy, etc. I have a clear plan, writing one at a time according to my interests. I don’t seek fame and glory—just enough to make a living and support my family.
With that, Idol ends. Next is the Jianghu side stories, then the new book. Since I need to build a backlog first, everyone may have to wait a bit—but not too long, I hope. I’m looking forward to sharing Rabbit’s new book with you.
