35 Chapter - Leaving The Platform
“Oh, this guy is quite fast.”
Bai Cheng was a bit surprised; she thought she had arrived early enough, considering she had traveled by steam train.
Yet, Tang Yan, relying on his manual railcar, still managed to reach First Station before noon on the fifth day.
“This guy definitely has talent.”
Of course, for Bai Cheng, it was just a slight surprise.
She glanced at him before retracting her gaze and returning to her train down the steps.
“There’s still nearly an hour, which is enough time for me to organize my supplies.”
The transported materials, combined with the acquired rewards, had now filled the entire carriage with a chaotic mess, leaving Bai Cheng with no room to even stand inside.
There was no connecting corridor between the carriage and the locomotive, only a simple passageway with no handrails on either side, making it easy to fall off.
This was also the only door in this carriage; the rear of the train was simply a sealed door panel.
Is this design reasonable?
Bai Cheng had originally wanted to open another door for easier access, but the carriage setup was different from the railcar; these wooden door panels around could not be removed, only upgraded.
“Never mind, I should deal with these useless things first.” Bai Cheng looked around; the most accumulated and useless items were the spoils obtained from killing Infinite Marauderss.
It wasn't that they were useless, just useless to Bai Cheng.
She immediately returned to the locomotive and put them all up on the exchange.
“Trader: Bai Cheng”
“Trading Goods: Iron Hammer * 2 (remaining 10) / Mount Saddle * 1 (remaining 10) / Canned Meat * 2 (remaining 22) / Wild Boar Meat * 2 (remaining 40) ......”
“Demand: Any White Employee Card * 1”
The locomotive counted as one section, and Bai Cheng now had a carriage, which meant she had a second section, allowing her to recruit her second employee.
Using these items, which were useless to her, to exchange for employee cards that were equally useless to others, she believed this was definitely a worthwhile transaction.
After all, Bai Cheng believed that most of the survivors who had made it this far also had their own employees.
“It can also help me get rid of this junk.”
With Chiyan, Bai Cheng didn't even need to hoard food; she just needed to lure and kill a wild beast during the day, which was completely enough for a day's meals.
Next, she built several more iron boxes to store supplies.
Although the steam train's load capacity greatly increased, space was limited, and exceeding a certain weight would still affect its speed.
Bai Cheng stacked these newly built iron boxes in groups of three, forming a nine-square grid against the carriage wall, occupying most of the edge space.
Then, she moved some of the structures from the locomotive, such as the workbench and furnace, into the carriage, placing them on the other side.
Only a small aisle was left in the middle, just wide enough for Bai Cheng to lie down completely.
“There’s still not enough space,” Bai Cheng sighed, looking at the clean and tidy carriage before her.
To be honest, she really wanted to sleep in a bed; waking up on the floor every day left her body aching.
But the small aisle clearly couldn't fit a bed anymore.
“Just a little more, when I get the second carriage, I will definitely build a bedroom for myself!”
Although a bed could still fit if space was squeezed, Bai Cheng still had many blueprints yet to be built, and she needed to reserve space for them.
After all the scattered supplies were stored, she re-inventoried all her existing materials to facilitate her next actions and upgrades.
“Basic Supplies: 200 scrap iron, 100 exquisite leather, 100 iron ore, 250 charcoal, 450 coal, 320 unlimited coins”
The nine iron boxes plus the backpack, a total of 1100 units of space, were all completely full.
As for materials like fine wood, Bai Cheng didn't keep any, submitting them all to the upgrade list.
Of course, this also included the boiler and furnace, as she was about to leave the station, and 100km would definitely not be enough to reach the next station.
These supplies were all what remained after she had added them.
“Blueprints: Exquisite Leather Bed, Kiln, Flowerpot.”
“Facilities: condenser * 2, Furnace, Workbench, Iron Box * 9, Wooden Table.”
“Items: Space Backpack, Infinite Flashlight, Blade of Certain Death, silver axe, Silver Pickaxe, Infinite Lantern, Beast Repellent Powder, Beast Attractant Powder, Infinite Lighter, Multi-functional Watch, Towel, Mirror, Wall Lamp, Sun Hat, Car Door Lock, Survival Dagger ......”
As for items, there were simply too many miscellaneous ones.
Most of them were obtained through opening boxes, and Bai Cheng had also purchased some more from the vending machine earlier.
Among these items, except for one-time use items, most could be upgraded through cheng book to gain attribute points.
This was also Bai Cheng's only way to grow stronger, besides gaining experience points by killing enemies.
She stood still and summoned cheng book.
“Silver Pickaxe: 20 / 100”
“Who knows when the pickaxe will be upgraded next time.”
Fortunately, the reinforcement of the silver axe this time was completed through an upgrade selection, and it did not waste Bai Cheng's daily opportunity to change upgrade items.
Her gaze swept over these items, and she ultimately prioritized the one that was simplest to upgrade.
“Sun Hat: 0 / 20”
It just needed to be worn repeatedly.
Bai Cheng walked into the driver's cabin with the sun hat, glanced at the remaining departure time on the screen, which was less than half an hour.
She immediately started the train and released the brake lever.
“Depart!”
Woo—!
The steam train let out a roar and slowly began to move.
At the same time, the huge triangular screen in front suddenly turned to ash, followed by a blinding flash of light.
The train drove out of the station, and the view suddenly opened up.
Once Bai Cheng adapted to the strong light, she immediately looked out the window.
A dim sky, scattered giant withered trees, unknown green substances emitting a faint glow, and muddy surroundings.
Dead silent, desolate, like the end of the world.
“This looks like a swamp?” Bai Cheng leaned against the window, observing her surroundings carefully.
The air ✧ NоvеIight ✧ (Original source) was filled with immense humidity, and irregular-sized mud pits were visible everywhere on the ground; some withered trees had even fallen, lying across them, their decaying trunks already covered in moss.
Originally, Bai Cheng thought it just looked a bit desolate and had no dangers.
But upon closer inspection, it seemed there were unknown creatures lurking and swimming in the murky mud pits, hiding dangers.
On the distant tree trunks, a type of large black bird was perched; they were almost integrated with the environment, with only their pupils fixed on the train's direction.
“Madam, your subordinate smelled a trace of a fellow creature's lingering scent,” Chiyan suddenly spoke.
Hearing this, Bai Cheng's expression immediately darkened; the 'fellow creatures' Chiyan spoke of could certainly not be lions, but rather demonic beasts.
In other words, were demonic beasts already appearing in this swamp?
It was no longer a safe period; Bai Cheng and the train had no safety barrier protection.
Moreover, this boundless swamp before her, besides being desolate, showed no signs of any resources, and the muddy ground combined with the obstruction from withered trees could very well hinder the train's progress.
Bai Cheng suddenly felt a little panicked, worried that Chiyan alone would not be able to protect her.
Looking at the white employee cards that had already been traded and scattered on the ground, she made up her mind.
“No, I must immediately upgrade the second employee!”
