Chapter 13 013: The Secret in the Drawer

Dec 01, 2025 1,251 words

Lu Yu hadn’t even had time to admire the opulent decor of Lin Beixing’s home.
He followed the butler up the walnut-colored spiral staircase.
At first glance, there were at least four rooms on the second floor.
Though unsure which room he should enter, Lu Yu didn’t need to hesitate—the butler led the way.

The elderly butler stopped in front of one of the doors and simply stood there.
Lu Yu, half-believing and half-doubting, stepped forward. He thought to himself, *This guy’s surprisingly polite—not even stepping into a young lady’s room without permission.*

But the moment Lu Yu turned the doorknob, he was utterly stunned.

…It was a bathroom. A round mirror clearly reflected his own face.
For a split second, Lu Yu even wondered if there might be a hidden chamber behind the bathroom—a secret room that was Lin Beixing’s real bedroom.

But reality proved otherwise. It really was just an ordinary bathroom.

“Miss, please hurry. Teacher Gao is already waiting for you in the music room. Just wash your hands quickly and go,” the butler said.

“Mm.” Lu Yu nodded calmly. “Got it.”

He stepped inside to wash his hands. Despite the lavishness of Lin Beixing’s home, the bathroom wasn’t modern or high-tech—no smart mirror, no motion-sensor soap dispenser. On the spacious countertop sat nothing but a single bar of soap.

Lu Yu lathered his palms with the soap, rubbing in slow circles, and glanced up at his reflection in the mirror.
This was the first time he’d seen himself since taking over Lin Beixing’s body.

The girl in the mirror looked gentle and serene. Her high ponytail was tied neatly at the back with a bow, and when she smiled faintly, her bright eyes curved like crescent moons. Her egg-white skin flushed delicately, forming a sweet, captivating smile.

Honestly, if he took a closer look, Lin Beixing was undeniably beautiful—“delicious,” even.
But right now, Lu Yu had no heart to admire her looks.
His mind was racing with how he’d manage to bluff his way through the piano lesson.

………………………

Meanwhile, back in the rented apartment.

Who would have guessed that Lu Yu’s “Study Files” folder on his desktop actually contained real study materials?

Inside were heaps of digital test papers. Lin Beixing even checked the folder’s creation date—it was from three years ago!

She hadn’t expected to find anything useful here. Her gut told her a folder this boring-looking definitely hid something more interesting.
So, driven by curiosity, she’d opened it.

But it really was just study materials.

Still skeptical—she couldn’t believe Lu Yu would actually keep something so mundane on his desktop—Lin Beixing clicked open a few image files to examine them closely.

Hmm… Math problems. Specifically, middle school-level material.
Given the folder’s creation date, these were likely study notes Lu Yu had prepared for his high school entrance exam three years ago.

*He actually studied seriously back then?* Lin Beixing was baffled.

After browsing the web for a while longer, she quickly lost interest.
For a girl who rarely used computers and had zero interest in video games, sitting in front of one felt like serving time in prison.

After only half an hour, she abandoned the computer and began exploring Lu Yu’s room instead.

After all, he’d agreed—generously even—and told her she could use the room however she liked.
Compared to Lin Beixing herself, who wouldn’t let him open her wardrobe, look through her drawers, or even take a shower in her own home, she suddenly felt a little petty.

Naturally curious about a peer of the opposite sex, Lin Beixing pulled open the drawer beside the desk and peeked inside.

“Hmm…?”

A flash of vivid color caught her eye.
Inside lay a jumble of loose papers and small notebooks with crimson velvet covers.

Lin Beixing recognized them immediately.
These were the award certificates and honor scrolls she’d fought tooth and nail every year to earn—from both her school and citywide competitions.

She picked one up absentmindedly—and realized the pile of “useless paper” stacked inside was nearly two centimeters thick. Including the certificates, they filled the entire drawer.

Stunned, she paused for a moment before her eyes drifted to the most important detail: the awardee’s name.

Bold black characters spelled out two words: **Lu Yu**.

*National Middle School Essay Competition – Jiangshui City Division, Junior High Category, First Prize*
*Junior Olympic Mathematics Contest – Gold Medal*
*10th Jiangshui City Poetry Festival – Grand Prize*
*Model Student, Outstanding Class Committee Member, Academic Star, Calligraphy Talent…*

All these honors—tossed in like trash—were precisely the accolades Lin Beixing had desperately tried and failed to win herself.

She stared, dumbfounded, at the drawer.
Slowly, she closed it—then opened it again.

No mistake.
This was real.

But…
Could these really belong to Lu Yu?

Suddenly, she remembered something the math teacher had casually mentioned at lunch when calling her into the office:
*“Lu Yu entered this school with top exam scores. He was brilliant back then. It’s a shame to see him waste his potential like this.”*

Lin Beixing gazed blankly at the thick stack of paper in her hands, flipping through them aimlessly.
If she recalled correctly, the legendary student who’d gained admission to Jiangshui No. 1 High School with the city’s top score also had the surname Lu.

Could it… really be him?

But if so—why was he now ranked dead last in the entire grade?

Lin Beixing felt she knew Lu Yu fairly well.
As class monitor, she’d paid special attention to him.
He had no bad habits—never fought, never cursed. Even though his grades were poor and he paid no attention in class, he never disturbed others. He just quietly did his own thing.

But his expression was always so cold—standing near him felt like being pushed miles away.

Yet, telling her that this seemingly apathetic, “completely checked-out” underachiever was once the city’s top student?
She simply couldn’t believe it.

“Whatever…”

Lin Beixing quietly shut the drawer.

“I’ll just ask him myself tomorrow at school.”

She spun around once in the office chair, her stomach growling loudly.
Dinner time had arrived—but unlike at home, where meals were always ready on the table, here she’d have to fend for herself.

She’d never used a food delivery app before—and had no idea how to.
Lu Yu’s place didn’t even have a refrigerator. Aside from a crate of cola in the corner, the only “food” was two packets of instant noodles.

Lin Beixing crouched in front of the noodles, studying them carefully.
She’d once eaten them during a late-night study session…

She should… be able to figure out how to cook them… right?
