Chapter 28 028 "I Can't Sleep Without You!"
This was probably the first time in Lin Beixing’s life that she’d enjoyed an entire morning completely undisturbed.
The sun blazed overhead, its heat stinging her skin.
But Lu Yu’s body could handle it—walking under this scorching sun felt entirely different from when she used her own fragile frame to stroll outside.
The hot wind on her face felt like freedom. When clouds drifted over the sun, she found herself wishing for a sudden downpour.
In these run-down, narrow streets, she walked with cheerful steps, her spirit oddly light and carefree.
She wasn’t familiar with this neighborhood and didn’t dare wander too far—so when she spotted a fried-food stall about 200 meters from the residential complex, she stopped.
The shop didn’t sell fried chicken, but it did have fried chicken wings, skewers, and sweet dessert soups.
The counter was piled high with food scraps and grease—it looked messy, unsanitary, the kind of place Lin Beixing would normally avoid.
But… since she was in Lu Yu’s body now… it should be fine, right?
The stuffy little shop didn’t even have air conditioning—nowhere near as cool as Lu Yu’s apartment. Lin Beixing decided to take her food to go.
At checkout, she discovered the entire bag cost only 76 yuan—far cheaper than she’d expected.
On her way back, she stopped by a convenience store and bought soda, ice cubes, and some snacks she’d seen before but never tried.
She even bought a brand-new set of toiletries. If they couldn’t switch bodies back tonight, she might actually have to consider taking a shower.
She hadn’t bathed in days—she was starting to smell.
Of course, buying new toiletries was a bit excessive—after all, she’d be washing *Lu Yu’s* body, not her own. But Lin Beixing stubbornly insisted on using something fresh. It was just… her way.
Arms full of junk food and small indulgences, she returned home, thoroughly pleased with herself.
But the moment she stepped through the door—before she could even take a single bite of her feast—Lu Yu’s phone buzzed.
Thinking Lu Yu had finally found a moment to reply, Lin Beixing quickly wiped her hands and unlocked the phone with Face ID.
A message popped up:
**JieGeLaiLa:** Bro, I can’t sleep without you!
Lin Beixing froze for a second—then her eyes widened in shock.
*What… what is this?!*
She tapped the contact’s profile with record-breaking speed.
The avatar was a gender-ambiguous blue robotic cat. She clicked into his Moments feed.
It was flooded with gaming screenshots.
She scrolled through page after page—until, near the very end, she found a photo.
It showed a brilliant red sun, accompanied by the caption: *“Today’s sunset is especially vivid~~”*
Lin Beixing frowned.
From the background, she could tell the photo was taken at their school—Jiangshui No. 1 High.
So… this “Jie Ge” was one of Lu Yu’s friends?
But what did *“I can’t sleep without you”* even *mean*?
Did they… sleep together often?
Her imagination immediately conjured an image: Lu Yu cuddling an indistinct, esports-loving girl in bed.
The phone suddenly felt heavy in her hand—so heavy she nearly dropped it.
Then another message arrived:
**JieGeLaiLa:** I’ve been tossing and turning all night! I lost that match just because I didn’t eat the outer turret plating! If I had, my Darius would’ve absolutely shredded that Garen!
The phone vibrated again. Lin Beixing stared at the message in prolonged silence.
…I have *no idea* what any of this means.
**JieGeLaiLa:** I’m so mad I can’t sleep! Anyway, I already ate lunch—how about we queue up for a few more games? We can sleep all day tomorrow anyway!
The phone kept buzzing. She was genuinely impressed by this person’s typing speed.
But since she couldn’t possibly respond meaningfully, Lin Beixing stayed silent—no text entered.
Honestly, she cared less about replying and far more about *who this person actually was*.
And even more urgently—*was he a guy or a girl?*
*Ding-ding-ding-ding!*
Suddenly, a barrage of voice calls exploded onto the screen.
Lin Beixing nearly flung the phone across the room in panic.
“…Hello?”
“HELLO!!”
That voice—she recognized it instantly.
It was Lu Yu’s deskmate.
“Jie Ge” was just Ren Jie’s online nickname!
An immense, irrational sense of relief washed over her.
Phew… so Lu Yu wasn’t secretly dating anyone, let alone sharing a bed. As class monitor, Lin Beixing would *never* have allowed that… probably.
“Knew it! I *knew* you weren’t asleep, Lu-ge! If you were really sleeping, your phone wouldn’t even pick up!”
Ren Jie was practically the only person outside Lu Yu’s family who truly understood his habits.
Lu Yu was a light sleeper and rarely rested well—so he always turned his phone off when trying to sleep. Once he was out, not even a thunderstorm could wake him… except his alarm.
Of course, the real reason he turned off his phone was almost certainly to *avoid* Ren Jie.
After all, this guy loved calling him at random hours to “queue up.”
“Let’s play!!” Ren Jie cried enthusiastically.
“Carry me, bro!!!”
Lin Beixing was completely lost.
She had no idea what to say or do.
“Carry… carry *where*?” she asked honestly, utterly unfamiliar with online gaming.
Ren Jie burst out laughing. “Lu-ge, did you sleepwalk into another dimension? Duh—*Summoner’s Rift*, obviously!”
*Summoner’s Rift?* Lin Beixing wondered. That sounds like a place in a game… but which one?
“Waaahhh, bro! You *promised* you’d carry me up the ranked ladder this week! Don’t be a heartbreaker! Waaahhh!!”
Hearing a grown man whine “waaahhh” through the speaker made Lin Beixing’s lips twitch involuntarily.
*Is this how boys interact?*
*We girls gave up the ‘waaahhh’ act years ago!*
*How has Lu Yu tolerated this for so long?!*
Suppressing her inner turmoil, she calmly replied:
“I’m still eating. After I finish, I’m going to sleep…”
“No no noooo!! You can’t abandon me, Lu-ge!!” Ren Jie’s voice nearly ruptured her eardrums. She instinctively held the phone 10 centimeters farther from her ear.
Unbeknownst to her, this exact gesture mirrored Lu Yu’s habitual reaction whenever he was annoyed by Ren Jie.
“I’ll message you when I wake up. You know I didn’t sleep last night—I’m really tired,” Lin Beixing said, carefully modulating her voice to sound neutral, neither too soft nor too sharp.
A few seconds of silence followed on the other end.
Lin Beixing tensed—worried she’d failed to convincingly mimic Lu Yu.
She’d observed him closely and knew some of his mannerisms, but she had zero clue how he actually interacted with his closest friends in private.
Still… judging by Lu Yu’s personality, he probably wouldn’t indulge Ren Jie’s antics too much.
“Ugh, fine, fine,” Ren Jie finally sighed. “You can’t force a melon to ripen. I’ll go wash up and sleep too—we’ll game tomorrow!”
He paused. Something felt… off.
Today’s Lu-ge seemed unusually gentle.
Normally, if Ren Jie dared disturb his sleep, Lu Yu would flatly refuse and snap, “Piss off,” without hesitation.
*Especially* once the “waaahhh” started—Lu Yu’s “get lost” would’ve already been fired like a bullet.
But today? So soft-spoken. So patient. Ren Jie figured Lu Yu must be utterly exhausted.
After a moment’s consideration, he decided health came first.
“Tomorrow for sure! I’ll play one custom Darius match, then crash!”
“Yeah, I’m off to rest too,” Lin Beixing replied.
“Bye, Lu-ge! Tomorrow’s the day!”
“Tomorrow for sure.”
…Though “tomorrow” might not actually happen.
But for now, Lin Beixing would delay the inevitable as long as possible. She had absolutely no idea how to play online games—let alone “carry” anyone.
After hanging up with Lu Yu’s overly enthusiastic best friend, she finally got to enjoy her feast.
She gazed at the spread before her—skewers, sweet soup, soda—all laid out like treasure. Her eyes sparkled with delight.
Ice-cold drinks. Greasy fried snacks. Generous heaps of chili powder.
Completely oblivious to basic nutrition, Lin Beixing had no idea she’d just assembled the ultimate “diarrhea combo.”
