Chapter 22 Chapter 22: Breakfast

Jan 12, 2026 1,326 words

The night passed quickly.

Outside the window, the sun was already high in the sky, yet the two people inside the room were still immersed in the gentle comfort of the bed.

Jiang Zixuan had been awake for ten minutes already. During those ten minutes, he had mainly been hesitating over whether to get up or not.

The reason was simple: Shu Yuxin was currently clinging tightly to him like an octopus, sleeping soundly.

Jiang Zixuan felt a bit of a headache.

Sleeping together with a beautiful girl—this was clearly supposed to be something where he got the better end of the deal. Yet he was more restrained than Shu Yuxin, almost acting more like a shy girl than she was.

Thinking of this, he recalled what happened last night… or perhaps it should be called early this morning, when he and Shu Yuxin were together in bed. At the time, Shu Yuxin had suggested watching some “educational” videos together. Combined with the atmosphere then, he had naturally assumed she meant the kind with FBI warnings, and had even mentally prepared himself.

In the end, the two of them watched an hour-long compilation of traffic accidents.

To be fair, it really was quite educational—at the very least, it gave Jiang Zixuan, who had only gotten his driver’s license half a year ago, plenty of driving experience.

It was just that some of the uncensored fatal accident scenes made him feel rather uncomfortable.

Rubbing his temples, Jiang Zixuan gently removed Shu Yuxin’s arm from around him. Just as he was about to move her leg off his waist, Shu Yuxin took the initiative to roll over, successfully freeing him.

After yawning, Shu Yuxin’s eyes opened slightly. She stared at Jiang Zixuan for a moment and mumbled groggily, “Mm… you’re getting up this early?”

“Yeah. If you’re still sleepy, keep sleeping for a bit,” Jiang Zixuan said as he got out of bed. After turning off the air conditioner, he planned to leave the bedroom.

Shu Yuxin hugged the blanket and curled into a ball, about to go back to sleep, when she heard Jiang Zixuan’s voice again: “Oh right, what do you want for breakfast? I’ll go buy it for you.”

Her eyes, which had just closed, suddenly opened.

“Almost forgot… I’m basically your nanny now, right?” she muttered quietly as she struggled to get out of bed. “I’m supposed to make breakfast too.”

Standing at the doorway, Jiang Zixuan couldn’t help but laugh. “It’s fine. We can just buy breakfast outside. You can sleep a bit more.”

“Huh? Have you ever seen a nanny skip making breakfast because she can’t get out of bed?” Shu Yuxin, with her hair in a mess, sat on the bed swaying for a while. Then, squinting her eyes, she felt her way off the bed, bumped past Jiang Zixuan, and went straight into the bathroom.

Seeing how drowsy she looked, Jiang Zixuan was genuinely worried she might fall asleep right there in the bathroom.

Still, he didn’t stop her. Glancing at the closed bathroom door, he scratched his messy hair, chuckled softly, turned around, and went back to get dressed.

Strictly speaking, this time of day could no longer be considered morning. But for homebody-type youths, “morning” and “before noon” were essentially the same concept—anything before twelve o’clock. Therefore, getting up early for reasons other than going to school felt quite novel to Shu Yuxin. After dawdling around at home for quite a while, once she finally finished washing up and getting ready, she and Jiang Zixuan went downstairs together to visit the market. This could be considered the true start of her first day as a “private nanny.”

Although there were plenty of breakfast shops near Wyers, at Shu Yuxin’s insistence, Jiang Zixuan still chose to eat breakfast at home. The entire breakfast consisted of two bowls of noodle soup, two fried dough sticks, and two cups of soy milk. Aside from the noodle soup, which Shu Yuxin made herself, the rest were bought outside.

This wasn’t Shu Yuxin compromising; rather, it was her own request to increase the breakfast portions. She didn’t usually get many chances to eat breakfast, mainly because she often slept right through breakfast time. But whenever she did eat breakfast, she would always buy a cup of soy milk—it had already become one of her small habits.

This breakfast wasn’t particularly delicious, but Jiang Zixuan ate until he was very full.

After finishing breakfast and cleaning up the table, Jiang Zixuan looked at the figure washing dishes in the kitchen and asked, “When are you planning to go back to school to get your things today?”

“No rush. Let’s go in the afternoon. I don’t really feel like moving right now.”

“By the way, our school’s clubs started recruiting today,” Jiang Zixuan said as he sat on the living room sofa scrolling through information on his phone. “The freshmen just finished military training, and all the clubs are scrambling to recruit new members.”

“Clubs?” Shu Yuxin’s hands paused for a moment.

She remembered Peng Xiaoxiao had mentioned club-related things to her before.

“Yeah, Nanhu College should be starting recruitment around these days, right?”

“No idea. I haven’t paid attention.”

Jiang Zixuan smiled helplessly. “You should at least pay some attention to school matters.”

Shu Yuxin didn’t respond.

“How about we go take a look later? We don’t really have anything else to do anyway,” Jiang Zixuan suggested.

“What’s there to look at…”

“Aren’t you planning to join a club? I remember you get credit points for joining clubs, right?” Jiang Zixuan put down his phone and looked toward the kitchen. “And I heard there are quite a few interesting clubs… like the anime club.”

Shu Yuxin had just finished washing the dishes and was coming out of the kitchen. Hearing his words, she couldn’t help but laugh. “Ha, anime club? Don’t you know anime clubs are usually full of normies? Or are you interested in the anime club?”

Jiang Zixuan shrugged. “Just saying. I never said I was interested.”

Back in high school, he’d been quite into anime for a while. Back then, he and Shu Yuxin would almost every night hold their phones together waiting for new episodes to update. But now, he didn’t have that much enthusiasm anymore. As people grew up, their interests changed quickly too.

Shu Yuxin sat down beside him, stretched lazily without any concern for appearances, and then took out her phone.

Coincidentally, just as she took it out, she received a message from Peng Xiaoxiao—

【There’s club recruitment at Central District Plaza today. Want to go check it out together? I heard there’s even a gaming club.】

“Club recruitment…” Shu Yuxin murmured softly. After replying positively to Peng Xiaoxiao, she nodded. “Let’s go take a look?”

Noticing the message on her phone, Jiang Zixuan suddenly asked, “Your friend?”

“Yeah.”

“Male or female?”

Shu Yuxin froze. “Why are you asking that?”

“Nothing, just curious.”

“Female. My roommate—the one you saw in the dorm that day,” Shu Yuxin put her phone away. “She’s a hardcore otaku.”

Jiang Zixuan laughed. “So you can communicate normally with other girls now?”

The way she used to interact with girls was painful enough for him just to watch.

Understanding the implication behind his words, Shu Yuxin shot him a glare, but didn’t argue back.

Because she realized she couldn’t find a single point to refute him.
