Chapter 57 Chapter 57: The Delivery
Since Yan Zhikai had come over, Shu Yuxin didn’t make breakfast that day. The three of them went downstairs to a small diner and had bowls of noodle soup, calling it a meal.
This was where the changes in the way Shu Yuxin and Jiang Zixuan had adapted to each other became apparent. At the very beginning, because of the issue of splitting the rent, Shu Yuxin had stubbornly chosen to take responsibility for all three meals, breakfast included. She felt that if she didn’t do this, Jiang Zixuan would be getting the short end of the deal, and at the same time she worried that he might develop some negative opinion of her because of it—even though she knew in her heart that Jiang Zixuan wasn’t that kind of person. Still, when it came to dealing with close friends, she always nervously overthought a lot of things that were basically useless.
If this had been a few days earlier and Yan Zhikai had come over to hang out, she might really have ignored the chubby guy and made Jiang Zixuan a simple breakfast anyway—just like how she had cooked dinner in front of him when Peng Xiaoxiao had visited before. Even though it felt a bit embarrassing, she had still stubbornly pushed through it.
But now, the two of them had started to be more flexible. When someone came to visit, they would take special circumstances into account and adapt accordingly. Of course, one could also say that Shu Yuxin had thought things through—or simply gotten lazy. In any case, Jiang Zixuan’s attitude had remained the same from start to finish.
At least now she didn’t have to force herself into what she personally considered an embarrassing situation, which made Shu Yuxin feel much more relaxed.
All the equipment Yan Zhikai bought had been shipped to the small street behind the West District dormitories of Nanhu College. Although it was currently the National Day holiday, there were still plenty of students staying on campus. Naturally, that small but important street hadn’t closed.
This was Shu Yuxin’s second time coming here.
On the small path leading to the street, students could be seen from time to time—some heading toward the street like them, others already carrying their packages back. Among them were students from both Nanhu College and Minghai University.
“There really are a lot of people staying on campus,” Shu Yuxin muttered softly as she followed behind Jiang Zixuan at a leisurely pace. “With such a long holiday, don’t they go home?”
Even though she herself hadn’t gone home either.
“What’s the point of going home? It’s more fun staying at school,” Yan Zhikai replied. He waved a hand behind him and snorted lightly, as if laughing. “Let me tell you, those people preparing for grad school entrance exams practically wish they could spend twenty-five hours a day in the library. Asking them to go home would probably be more painful than—well, you know. But they’re just a small minority. Most of the people staying at school are normal folks planning to have a wild week.”
“…Oh, I see.”
Shu Yuxin wasn’t planning to take the postgraduate exams, so naturally she couldn’t understand the mindset of those “abnormal” people Yan Zhikai was talking about.
Maybe that was what being a top student was like.
It was still morning, and on top of that it was a holiday period, so there weren’t many people on the street. That was good news for Yan Zhikai—when it came to picking up large items, fewer people meant much less unnecessary trouble.
There were only two employees in the shop at the moment—more accurately, one was checking parcels while the other was playing on his phone. Both looked quite young, not much older than Shu Yuxin and the others.
As soon as someone walked in, the guy sitting behind the counter playing on his phone didn’t even look up and blurted out, “Pickup code?”
“Brother Cheng, helping out here?” Yan Zhikai ignored that question. As he spoke, he walked toward the guy, took something out of his pocket, fiddled with it for a couple of seconds, and then pulled out an item and handed it over.
Only then did the man called Brother Cheng lift his gaze from his phone. As he looked up, he almost reflexively reached out to take what Yan Zhikai handed him—then realized it was a piece of Doublemint gum.
“…I thought it was a cigarette,” Brother Cheng complained, though he still took the gum, tore open the wrapper, and popped it into his mouth. “Nothing to do during National Day, so I’m helping out here for a few days. Gotta earn some snack money.”
“Nice, nice. C-404, seven big ones in a row. Help us get them out,” Yan Zhikai said, giving the pickup code.
“Seven? Those are yours?” Brother Cheng stood up with his phone and cursed, “What the hell did you buy? Nearly killed us during unloading.” Without waiting for Yan Zhikai’s reply, he turned and headed inside. “Yinzi! Those seven big packages! Drag them out!”
Seeing this, Yan Zhikai couldn’t help shouting, “Be careful! That stuff’s high-end—break it and you can’t afford to赔 it!”
Brother Cheng ignored him.
Jiang Zixuan and Shu Yuxin stood behind, watching curiously. To be honest, they had also thought Yan Zhikai had handed over a cigarette just now.
When Yan Zhikai turned around and saw both of them staring at him, he raised a hand to scratch his head and frowned. “What? You guys want some too? None left. Just one piece from the other day—would’ve been a waste to throw it away.”
“……”
The equipment Yan Zhikai bought really was huge. A single box was about the size of a small washing machine. It wasn’t particularly heavy, though—who knew how much protective padding was stuffed inside.
The two workers carried three sets of equipment out and neatly placed them outside the shop, making the scene look like a washing machine wholesale display. Yan Zhikai circled the three big boxes twice, looking troubled. “How the hell are we supposed to get these over there?”
“What are these things?” Brother Cheng, standing nearby, couldn’t help asking.
“Game consoles.”
“Oh, moving them to your activity room again?”
“Yeah.”
Brother Cheng looked at the three large boxes for a moment and said, “We can help.”
Yan Zhikai shot him a glance. “Name your price.”
“There’s another unloading run later. Help us carefully check the items. At noon we switch shifts—I’ll call someone to help you carry these over.”
“Deal.”
“Straightforward.”
After reaching an agreement in an instant, Yan Zhikai turned to Jiang Zixuan and Shu Yuxin, who were standing there looking a bit dazed, and spread his hands. “It’s almost noon anyway, right? How about we hang out here for a bit? There’s Wi-Fi—don’t worry.”
Jiang Zixuan twitched the corner of his mouth. “…I don’t mind.”
He had been called over to help in the first place.
“What about you, Shu Yuxin? You can just hang out here and play for a bit. You won’t need to help later.”
Shu Yuxin nodded. “Sure. I don’t have anything else to do anyway.”
