Chapter 59 Chapter 59: The Gold Farmers
“Da Ming, stop playing for a bit and come help carry the boxes,” Yan Zhikai shouted toward Wu Ming, who was still calmly playing his game inside, after carrying the first box in together with Jiang Zixuan.
Wu Ming ignored him.
“Da Ming!” Yan Zhikai shouted again.
“Busy!” Wu Ming didn’t even turn his head and yelled back, “You guys can carry it yourselves, can’t you?! I’m in a guild war!”
“Guild war my ass—skipping one round gonna kill you?” Yan Zhikai tilted his head at him.
“I make seventy thousand copper in two rounds! You gonna pay me that?!” After yelling this, Wu Ming stopped responding altogether.
Yan Zhikai called him twice more but got no reply.
Shu Yuxin walked over to Yan Zhikai and Jiang Zixuan and took the initiative to ask, “Do you want me to help? I think I can carry this.”
“No need. The two of us can handle it. You can help with unboxing later,” Yan Zhikai shook his head.
“Oh.”
The only empty room in the activity room had always been used as a storage room before. But calling it a storage room was a bit of a stretch—there really wasn’t much piled up inside. For a club where most members valued practicality above all else, it was hard to accumulate useless junk. At most, there were some spare peripherals or personal items that someone had left behind and forgotten.
The last big cleanup of the activity room had been two days before the National Day holiday, so the empty room was still fairly clean. The two of them placed the boxes directly in the middle of the room. Yan Zhikai clapped his hands, glanced around, and said, “So, we’re putting them here?”
“Um… these need to be connected to the internet, right?” Shu Yuxin also looked around the room.
Yan Zhikai pointed toward a corner of the room. “No problem. There are definitely ports there, and there’ll be network cables too. We’re an online gaming club—trust us on hardware issues.”
That settled Shu Yuxin’s concerns.
“Then let’s get to work,” Yan Zhikai waved at Jiang Zixuan. “Carry the other two over first and set everything up together.”
Bringing over the other two boxes didn’t take much time. After that came the enjoyable unboxing phase. Shu Yuxin had only seen pictures of this kind of VR equipment online before—this was her first time seeing it in person. There wasn’t anything particularly surprising about it. The whole setup consisted of two parts: one was the helmet, used to receive and transmit neural signals, and it also helped the user enter a certain kind of special light-sleep state; the other part was the main unit. At first glance, it looked like an ordinary computer tower. Its role was similar too—it was the core of the entire system, mainly responsible for converting, reading, and transmitting the neural signals sent from the helmet.
Installing the whole setup was easy and straightforward. With modern high-tech devices becoming more and more simplified and user-friendly, something that only required plugging in a few cables could be assembled even without reading the manual—at most, it would just take a bit longer.
After everything was installed, Yan Zhikai looked at the three VR units neatly lined up in the corner, clearly satisfied. “Nice. Another kind of happiness added to a shut-in’s life.”
Shu Yuxin was still flipping through the manual. Hearing this, she muttered softly, “This thing… when you use it, doesn’t it put you into some kind of shallow sleep? So basically, sleeping?”
“Yeah,” Yan Zhikai nodded.
“Then we can’t play it standing up, right?” Shu Yuxin pointed at the three machines in the corner.
The way they were set up really made it look like they were meant to be used standing.
Yan Zhikai stared at the three units for a few seconds before suddenly slapping his forehead. “No wonder something felt off.” Then he turned and walked out of the room. “Not a big deal. Just grab three chairs.”
Since it was the holiday, aside from the three of them, only Wu Ming was in the activity room. There were plenty of empty gaming chairs in the computer room—grabbing a few would easily solve the problem. And that’s exactly what they did. Yan Zhikai and Shu Yuxin dragged three gaming chairs over from beside Wu Ming, who remained calmly absorbed in his game and didn’t even glance at them.
While doing so, Shu Yuxin curiously looked at Wu Ming’s screen for a moment, but couldn’t make sense of it at all. Her only impression was that there were a lot of characters on the screen—half of it was filled with character IDs.
“What game is Wu Ming playing?” Shu Yuxin asked while dragging the chairs into the room.
“A wuxia game. Not interesting,” Yan Zhikai replied casually, pushing a chair into place and then closing the door behind them.
Shu Yuxin thought for a moment and said, “It feels like he’s always playing that game.”
“Yeah, all day long, just grinding,” Yan Zhikai snorted slightly. “And I’ve never seen him get anywhere with it.”
“Grinding? You can make money from that,” Jiang Zixuan said with a smile as he helped position the chairs.
Yan Zhikai, however, looked disdainful. “Make money? Let me put it this way—most grind players go through the same cycle: spend money to get gear, run dungeons, grind, make a bit of money, right? Then a new high-level dungeon opens, so they have to spend money again on better gear to run it, then keep grinding. Before long, an even higher-level dungeon opens. It’s basically an endless loop. The only difference is whether you put in more money than you get back—and most grinders put in more.”
“What about Wu Ming?” Shu Yuxin asked curiously.
Yan Zhikai curled his lips. “He’s one of the ‘most.’”
“Then why does he keep grinding?”
“He probably only sees the money he earns,” Yan Zhikai said as he sat down on a chair and adjusted the backrest. “Who knows what he’s thinking. Doesn’t have anything to do with me anyway. Alright, alright—time to try something new.”
Shu Yuxin and Jiang Zixuan exchanged a glance, then stepped toward the other two chairs as well.
