Chapter 30 Chapter 30 You’re Pretty Cute Part 4

Dec 04, 2025 1,129 words

Xu Yecheng suddenly felt a headache coming on.

The shop manager looked at her with a troubled expression.

Yecheng’s brain spun at full speed. How was she supposed to explain all this without exposing herself?

What a miscalculation…

Her head hurt even more.

“Your voice sounds so natural. It doesn’t sound like a fake one at all,” the shop manager said again.

Yecheng sighed, her expression turning aggrieved.

She had prepared for this for so long, even quit her previous job—was she really going to be stopped here?

For the first time, she felt like the biggest clown was herself.

Seeing the dimness in Yecheng’s eyes, her tightly knitted brows, and the way her soft pink lips pressed together, the shop manager suddenly understood something.

“You really are a boy?”

Yecheng looked at her helplessly, then stiffly nodded.

“This is your real voice?”

Yecheng froze for a moment. The shop manager picked up the ID card again, glancing at her face.

“You really hate being your male self, don’t you…?” the shop manager asked cautiously.

Yecheng had still been feeling a little wronged, but that question stunned her so much she forgot all about it.

“Is it that you’ve changed so much because you’re taking hormones or something…?”

It took Yecheng a while to catch up to her train of thought.

Her thinking jumped way too fast!?

Then Yecheng realized—this was actually a great excuse.

“Mm…” she replied a little guiltily. But hearing the manager’s earlier words, her mood grew complicated. “Yeah… I really don’t like that version of myself.”

Lazy, no goals, useless…

“I see. Sorry for offending you earlier… my bad,” the manager said, her tone softening. “Don’t worry, I won’t tell anyone.”

Yecheng suddenly felt touched.

“Mm. Thank you, Manager.”

There was no other choice… she could only hide it for now.

She sighed helplessly.

“Wow, but you look so cute as a girl,” the manager said again, carefully examining her face.

A wave of embarrassment washed over Yecheng.

In all her years alive, it was the first time anyone had called her cute. She felt like her dignity was evaporating.

Sure, she did want compliments to satisfy a bit of vanity, but a rough guy like her being called cute?

Her scalp tingled.

…Though she had to admit, she did look pretty cute right now.

“Aha… thanks.” Yecheng forced a small smile and replied softly.

“Alright, let me explain the job details.” The manager tucked her hair behind her ear and began outlining the responsibilities.

Basically, she would be doing odd jobs. But because this café had high cleanliness standards, Yecheng would have to pay extra attention to hygiene.

She’d need to wear a uniform, serve coffee, coordinate front and back of house…

When there were no customers, she could slack off a little. Then came the detailed descriptions of maid-day duties.

Yecheng was assigned to work on the second floor, with shifts arranged according to her class schedule.

Apparently, maid events were held on the second floor. No wonder—how could a shop with such a retro aesthetic fit maids on the main floor?

One rest day per week. Maid day temporarily scheduled for Sunday, when everyone was free.

Then the manager explained the cleaning standards. With how detailed they were, Yecheng instantly felt intense pressure. No wonder the salary was high.

“After your shift, you can go to the back to get a free dessert as a reward,” the manager added while registering Yecheng’s ID info.

Yecheng blinked, feeling unexpectedly moved. “That’s so nice!?”

“Of course. I’m super kind—I wouldn’t mistreat you all.” The manager hummed proudly, then checked the time. “Change your WeChat profile info later. I’ll add you to the staff group.”

“Huh? Change my profile?”

“It says ‘male’ on your account… You don’t want your secret getting out, right?” she said with a meaningful smile.

“Oh, oh—I'll use another WeChat account.”

Yecheng had two phone numbers and naturally two WeChat accounts.

The second one was created specifically for work.

She thought for a moment and logged into the alternate account.

“Ah, I’m running late—I need to go hand out flyers. Send me your WeChat once you’re done fixing it. And send me your class schedule later so I can arrange your shifts.” The manager smoothed her skirt and stood up.

“Alright then, I’ll contact you later… If that’s all, I’ll get going first,” Yecheng said hesitantly.

“Sure, go ahead.”

Just as Yecheng turned to leave, the shop manager called out again.

“Yecheng—Wan Ning, wait.”

Yecheng turned back. “Yes?”

The manager grabbed something from her desk and shoved it into Yecheng’s hands.

Yecheng looked down—several pieces of candy.

“Cheer up~ You’re the best,” the manager said with a bright grin as she walked out.

Yecheng froze for a moment, then let out a helpless smile.

Chocolate, huh…

“Thank you,” she murmured softly. Even though the manager had already left, she still felt genuinely grateful.

With nothing else to do, she walked down the street. She had never been stared at like this before. She tried to speed up, yet worried that if she moved too fast her skirt might flutter too much…

Though she knew she was overthinking it. With a skirt this long, unless she flipped upside down in public, there was no way she’d flash anything.

She tore open the chocolate wrapper and placed the piece in her mouth. The smooth, rich texture and the sweet aroma filled her senses.

The sweetness really did lift her mood.

Eating sweets occasionally… didn’t seem so bad.

She looked down at the skirt she was wearing, feeling something strange and indescribably complicated inside.

She had better get changed and hurry back to the dorm. She still had a film appreciation class that night. Being a sophomore meant no mandatory evening study, so evenings were much freer than freshman year.

Scanning her ID at the school gate, she sighed in relief that the entrance wasn’t facial-recognition-enabled. Otherwise, going in and out like this would be impossible.

As she walked into campus, she thought about buying some snacks from the campus supermarket. But before she even reached it—

Someone stopped her again.

“Hello, can I trouble you for a moment?”
A girl with a friendly smile stood in front of her, holding a recording device.
