Chapter 38: Theresis

"Welcome to Babel, Operator Fiammetta."

The personnel department operator was quite polite, even making Fiammetta feel a bit overwhelmed by the attention.

"So smooth."

Being clever, she certainly didn't think this was because of her own merits, so there was only one answer...

She glanced at Kevin's departing figure and smiled slightly.

——————

"People like you don't seem to have a motive for joining Babel. May I know the reason?"

Faced with the inquiry, Kevin stopped. He remembered this person; she had been present during the test. It seemed her name was... Kal'tsit?

Being able to stand beside Theresa meant her status was likely not low, but that wasn't important.

He crossed his arms and uttered four words flatly.

Kal'tsit's expression stiffened slightly, but her emotions didn't fluctuate much. After all, they were both old-timers; it wasn't so easy to break their composure.

"Theresa told me that your reason for joining here is because of the Doctor? But..."

She could understand that line of thinking, but she didn't believe Kevin's purpose ended there.

"No, you needn't harbor unnecessary thoughts. My objective is very simple. As for anything more complex... even if it exists,

you lack the necessary strength to interfere."

Kevin shook his head at her. He didn't want to continue this meaningless conversation.

People's suspicion of the unknown can never cease, at least not until they possess strength corresponding to it.

Kal'tsit stepped aside, letting Kevin pass and allowing him to leave.

——————

By the time Kevin arrived at the training ground, it was already around nine in the morning.

On the yellow desert soil, the bustling atmosphere resembled the scorching sun in the sky.

Babel's instructors were drilling the reserve operators and newly joined operators—Guards, Defenders, Snipers, Casters... each specialization had its own dedicated instructor.

Most of them were Sarkaz. Not only that, but among the new operators they trained, Sarkaz also made up the vast majority.

Mercenaries, ordinary people... some joined to have a place for themselves, others actively joined out of admiration for Her Highness the Princess. In short, their purposes and backgrounds were as complex as a mixed stew.

Their qualities were uneven, so screening and then uniformly training and commanding the remaining ones were the first tasks for the instructors.

"Operator Kevin, correct?"

Sharpthorn sized up this colleague who would soon be serving as an instructor alongside her. She had seen Kevin's photo beforehand, so she could roughly recognize him.

"Mhm."

From among the groups being trained, Kevin spotted a figure that somewhat surprised him.

"According to your file, you are skilled in swordsmanship, correct?"

"...Correct."

Kevin felt this statement wasn't entirely accurate; he knew many things. But he didn't argue about it.

"Then, how about we first assign you to try being a Guard instructor?"

"Acceptable."

In just a few words, the reserve operators who had signed up for the Guard profession remained unaware of what kind of hellish situation they would soon face during their upcoming training...

——————

Kazdel Military Commission, Central Command Tower.

This was the current base of the Sarkaz Regent, Theresis.

"Theresa has already retreated to the south near Rim Billiton?"

This was a man who, like Theresa, had light pink hair and black horns. However, compared to the approachable and compassionate Theresa, the man before him appeared more heroic and martial.

A military aura emanated from him. Clad in black armor, his posture was upright.

He was Theresis, Theresa's elder brother, one of the six heroes who once carried the banner of Kazdel.

His mood was clearly not good at the moment. Although significant advantages had been gained on the front lines, Babel had not suffered the massive losses he had anticipated.

"Yes, Your Highness Theresis. You should be aware of that Feline's methods."

A person wearing a peculiar mask, with a long sword resembling withered branches at their waist, and clad in black robes answered respectfully.

"I doubt it. She might have some skill in maintaining certain relationships, but her talent in operational command... Hah."

Theresis chuckled a few times before his tone turned serious again.

"It's probably that fellow called 'the Doctor' again, isn't it? The one who tilted the balance of power... He really is something."

Theresis's eyes held caution. The conflict between the Military Commission and Babel had been ongoing for a long time. No one understood better than him, the Regent, just how great an advantage the Military Commission's forces held. 6⑨4⑨3⑥1③5

But ever since that fellow arrived at Babel, winning momentum turned into advantage, and advantage shifted into stalemate...

This retreat might seem like Babel foolishly ceding the entire central region of Kazdel, but in reality, it was just a hot potato. Babel's personnel were simply insufficient to defend their sphere of influence.

At least in the eyes of Theresis, their enemy, Babel's contraction strategy was undoubtedly successful.

After several rounds of exchanging chips, the Military Commission hadn't gained much advantage; they had merely driven Babel into the southern region for temporary recuperation.

The best way to end the war was undoubtedly assassination. As long as either side's Amiya perished, a force gathered purely by faith and a Amiya's charisma would undoubtedly crumble like a mudslide.

"But... dealing with a Demon King is no easy task..."

As the most orthodox Demon King, Theresa's personal strength undoubtedly surpassed that of her elder brother. Even he, one of the six heroes, couldn't defeat Theresa. Sending a small number of elites to try would just be sending them to their deaths.

Knock knock knock————

A series of knocks sounded at the door.

The Confessarius silently nodded to Theresis before turning and leaving.

"Come in, Manfred. What is it?"

"It's regarding an application for troop mobilization."

Also a Sarkaz, Manfred walked in with a black-red cloak draped behind him. After saluting, he presented an application report in his hand.

"We cannot let Babel recuperate like this, Your Highness. We must do something."

"Mhm. Indeed."

No one understood his sister's charisma better than him. If not for his stance—fighting for living space for the Sarkaz through violence and war—which resonated more with Sarkaz national sentiment... if their positions were swapped, he probably couldn't persevere as resiliently as Theresa did under disadvantageous circumstances.

"What do you intend to do?"

He looked at this young general of his.

"The Lovenian Plains."

Manfred earnestly pointed to a location marked on the plan. In all of southern Kazdel, the Lovenian Plains were undoubtedly the most suitable warzone for their strategic needs.

Open, flat—relying on clashes of hard power. At least in terms of tactics and strategy, it would be difficult to determine the outcome of this battle.

"This plan will be approved."

Theresis didn't directly approve it but instead phrased it differently.
