Chapter 33 Chapter 33: The Appointment
Dorm 330, Building 17.
Su Yuan devoured her pork chop rice like a wild boar rooting in the dirt. She set down her chopsticks, satisfied, and wiped her mouth with a napkin.
Her phone rang again. A glance showed it was the same number.
This person was relentless. Ignoring him was useless. The longer she delayed, the more trouble it caused. Su Yuan decided she had better meet him. She grabbed her phone and told her roommates, “I’m going out for a bit.”
Gao Jun was absorbed in his computer and barely looked up.
Ji Yehao remembered Instructor Qin’s words about caring for Su Yuan. He said cautiously, “If anything happens, call me.”
“Relax. What could happen.”
Ten minutes later Su Yuan strolled toward the back hill training ground. The hill, called Jingyu Mountain, was an old mound that had existed before the school was built. Covered in dense vegetation and towering trees, it had winding paths and hidden pavilions. In spring, red cotton flowers and pink peonies bloomed along the stone steps, making the scenery beautiful.
By now it was past seven. The sky was dim, the street lamps flickered faintly.
The moonlight was thin, veiled like gauze.
Su Yuan wondered who had summoned her here. She had kept him waiting so long. Would he be angry.
She regretted it. If she had decided to come, she should not have delayed.
Passing a green belt, she suddenly limped deliberately, pretending her foot was injured, and walked unevenly toward the training ground.
As she approached, she saw a white figure. A tall, broad young man in a white tracksuit.
Closer still, she recognized his face. Her expression changed instantly. She turned to leave.
It was Lin Jun. The same Lin Jun whose confession she had ruined that afternoon. Meeting him now could not end well.
Lin Jun saw her too. “So the bastard finally came.” But his thought lasted only two seconds. He saw her turn and flee like she had seen a ghost.
The cigarette fell from his mouth. He cursed loudly. “Damn it.”
“Su Yuan, stop.” He strode forward and grabbed her arm. Lin Jun had been trained by his father since childhood. His grip was powerful.
Pain shot through her arm. Su Yuan panicked, struggling hard, but she could not break free. He dragged her toward Jingyu Mountain.
“Lin Jun, let me go.”
Dark thoughts filled her mind. Was he planning to beat her in some secluded place. Su Yuan was not afraid of fights, but she never fought without confidence. And she was no longer the high school Su Yuan. She had no trusty brick with her.
Looking at his burly frame, she feared he could send her to the hospital for months.
Lin Jun ignored her, his face fierce, dragging her like prey.
After dozens of meters they left the training ground and entered the shadowed path. Tall trees blocked the light, forming a tunnel. Couples usually came here to stroll. Tonight it only added fear.
They climbed to a pavilion. Su Yuan stopped resisting, resigned.
Lin Jun released her arm. He was startled by the warmth of her skin.
He steadied himself, staring at her silent face. He sneered. “So you can be afraid too. You kept me waiting for an hour.”
Su Yuan forced a weak smile. “I twisted my ankle earlier.”
“Really. You ran off just now without hesitation.”
“I suddenly remembered something important I forgot to do.”
He slapped the stone table. “Do you take me for a child.”
Su Yuan swallowed nervously.
“You think I want to beat you.” she asked.
“Beat you. Why would I. Oh yes, right now I very much want to beat you.”
Su Yuan cursed herself. She had dug her own grave. She thought quickly. She had no reason to be Xiao Yiyan’s shield. Better to explain the truth and ease his hatred. Whether he believed it was another matter.
“About this afternoon…”
“Yes. That’s why I called you. Tell me. What is your relationship with Yiyan.” He tore a vine from the pavilion and cracked it against the stone table. The sound was sharp.
Su Yuan flinched. “I have no relationship with her.”
“No relationship.”
Lin Jun froze, then roared. “Do you think I’ll believe that. I despise cowards who deny what they’ve done. Yiyan chose you, but you are useless.”
Su Yuan was stunned. She had not expected this reaction.
“Brother, I really have nothing to do with her.”
Lin Jun refused to believe. He thought Su Yuan was denying to save himself. His eyes blazed. He raised the vine to strike. Su Yuan stumbled back, tripped, and fell onto the bench.
“Lucky.” She wiped cold sweat.
Lin Jun grew angrier at her timid look. The weaker she seemed, the more furious he became. How could Yiyan choose such a man.
He had to beat him. Only then could his rage be eased.
The vine cracked against the stone table again and again. Su Yuan’s face paled.
Seeing him advance, she quickly said, “Wait. I swear I have nothing with Xiao Yiyan. I was only her shield.”
The vine paused. Lin Jun frowned. “Is that true.”
“Of course. Think about it. How could she like me.”
“Why not. Maybe she likes pretty boys.” He thought of his own burly frame and doubted. Maybe Yiyan preferred delicate men.
Su Yuan was stunned. “But I barely know her. We’ve only met a few times.”
“Look at me. Even if she liked me, I wouldn’t dare face your anger. Love is mutual. I cannot control her thoughts.”
Lin Jun studied her, suspicious but uncertain. “Even if she used you as a shield, do you not like her at all.”
Su Yuan’s answer surprised him. He had expected eagerness. Instead she seemed to avoid Yiyan.
“I do like her. Everyone admires beauty. But you need not worry. Nothing will happen between us.”
