Chapter 47 Chapter 47: A Jest

Jan 16, 2026 889 words

“Who are you cursing?” Ji Yehao, about to leave the room, turned back at Su Yuan’s voice.

Su Yuan realized her slip, waved her hand. “Nothing, nothing. Look over there.”

Gao Jun had already noticed the laptop on the desk. “Damn!!” He strode over, trembling with excitement. “A workstation‑level laptop—luxurious, elegant. With this keyboard and mouse, it’s worth thirty thousand yuan!”

His expression was like a miser seeing gold. He reached out to touch the keyboard.

“Thirty thousand!” Su Yuan was shocked. She knew laptops, but this was top‑tier. The price stunned her.

“Summer Jie actually uses such a high‑end laptop…” Her eyes gleamed with doubt.

“Hey, what are you doing!” She stopped Gao Jun as he reached for the power button.

“Su… Su Yuan, let me see it.” His face was hungry.

Su Yuan frowned. She couldn’t allow it. The contents were private. If Xia Linfei learned they had snooped, it would be shameful. And Gao Jun surely had seen similar machines before—his act was suspicious.

She smiled faintly, realizing his ploy. Curiosity about someone often leads to wanting to know more. Did Gao Jun truly like Summer Jie?

If so, she must stop him. If the laptop contained a diary, that was sacred. Reading it would be immoral.

“Su Yuan, what are you doing?”

She pressed the lid shut firmly. Gao Jun glared.

Better a foolish ally than a treacherous one. To him, Su Yuan was the foolish teammate. But she stood firm. “This holds Summer Jie’s privacy. You can’t peek.”

“…You’re childish,” Gao Jun muttered.

“Childish?” Su Yuan flushed, ready to explode.

“Come look here!” Ji Yehao’s voice called from the next room.

“Lucky for you.” Su Yuan shook her fist and hurried off.

Gao Jun grumbled. “Traitor. Pig teammate. Still too naïve.” Yet he noticed something—Su Yuan’s movements were… cute. A strange thought crossed his mind: Is she really a boy? He couldn’t imagine she had transformed.

He glanced at the unattended laptop, sighed. “Forget it. One day I’ll see it openly.”

The next room was a study, dark and cluttered with cables. Two massive screens glowed above a long desk, with a huge workstation beneath.

“4155BF3?” Gao Jun blurted.

Su Yuan looked blank. “What’s that?”

“Lenovo ThinkStation D20. Dual six‑core CPUs, 24GB RAM, expandable to 96GB, 450GB drives, twelve threads. Worth about 160,000 yuan.”

“So expensive?” Su Yuan gasped.

“Few individuals use such machines unless they’re rich or obsessed,” Gao Jun said.

Su Yuan agreed. She had thought Linfei was modest, but now saw she lived well. Perhaps her part‑time work was for enjoyment, not necessity.

“Her family must be wealthy,” Ji Yehao observed.

Su Yuan nodded. “Hard to believe otherwise. But she doesn’t flaunt it. Let’s act as if we don’t know.”

“Agreed,” Gao Jun said. Then he chuckled darkly.

“What are you laughing at!”

“I didn’t realize Linfei was rich. Now I want to pursue her even more.”

“You want to be a kept man?” Su Yuan looked at him with disdain.

“Why not. A beautiful, wealthy wife—worth living off. Saves me years of struggle. I’ll eat soft rice!”

Su Yuan was stunned, then laughed. “If your father hears, he’ll throw you out. A disgrace to the family!”

“That’s true…” Gao Jun frowned. His father had high hopes.

“Don’t listen to Su Yuan,” Ji Yehao said. “Your family is already privileged. If you marry Linfei, it’s a strong alliance. Your father would be pleased.”

Gao Jun’s eyes lit. “Right. I mustn’t belittle myself. Yehao, as my brother, don’t compete with me.”

Su Yuan raised her thumb. “Exactly. Yehao is your biggest rival. Eliminate him early or you’ll regret it.”

She clearly sided with Gao Jun.

Ji Yehao sighed. “Do you think I’m so base? I know better than to covet a friend’s love.”

Gao Jun shook his head. “Even Su Yuan sees the risk. I’m right to be cautious.”

“…,” Ji Yehao muttered.

“Let’s stop this nonsense. Isn’t it absurd to plan how Gao Jun will chase Linfei?” Su Yuan said. “Feelings require both sides. Nothing is certain.”

“Oh, I see!” Gao Jun exclaimed. “Yehao, Su Yuan is tricking us.”

“Tricking?” Su Yuan blinked. “Explain.”

Ji Yehao added, “Say it clearly, or she’ll explode.”

Su Yuan grinned. “See, Yehao understands me.”

“Don’t you see? Su Yuan supports me chasing Linfei only to eliminate you. Once you’re out, she’ll step in and crush me easily.”

Ji Yehao froze. “Brilliant scheme!!”

“…,” Su Yuan thought. I hadn’t considered that. But it’s perfect. If Yehao withdraws, I could defeat Gao Jun easily.

She laughed inwardly.

“Do I seem that devious?” she asked.

“Who knows. Appearances deceive,” Gao Jun said, sighing as if doomed.

“Idiot!” Su Yuan punched and kicked him until satisfied.
