Chapter 45 Chapter 45: The Anime Club Will Back Su Yuan

Jan 16, 2026 811 words

Three days of waiting—Su Yuan was stunned. She had thought chromosome observation was as simple as looking under a microscope. She hadn’t expected cell culture, let alone three days of it. She worried she had burdened Xia Linfei.

“Maybe we should forget it,” she said awkwardly.

“How could we? I already drew your blood. You deserve to see your chromosomes,” Xia replied firmly. “Don’t overthink. You’ve helped our project, and even if you hadn’t, I’d still be glad to satisfy your curiosity.”

Su Yuan could only accept. Yet as they walked, a chilling thought struck her: If my chromosomes are revealed, won’t Xia know my true sex. She clenched her teeth, then sighed. So be it. If she knows, she knows.

“Su Yuan, let me treat you to dinner tonight.”

“What!”

Xia laughed. “Don’t be so shocked. We’re friends now. I’ll treat you. Invite your roommates too—Ji Yehao and Gao Jun. Let’s all meet.”

Su Yuan agreed, though suspicion flickered. Was Xia really inviting her, or was she interested in her roommates. After all, Xia was beautiful, single, and at an age where romance was expected. Su Yuan had once boasted about Yehao’s looks and Gao Jun’s creativity.

She admitted Yehao was handsome, magnetic to girls. Gao Jun was clever and skilled, also appealing.

“Summer Jie, are you looking for a boyfriend?” Su Yuan asked, uneasy.

Xia blinked, then laughed. “Why would you think that.”

“Isn’t it true?”

“Of course not. I just want company. If you dislike it, we won’t invite them.”

“No, I don’t dislike it,” Su Yuan said quickly. “But won’t it cost you more.”

“It’s nothing. Four people, not a banquet. I can afford it.”

“Alright, I’ll call them.” She phoned Yehao, then said, “They’ll meet us at the east gate.”

“Good. Tell me more about them.” Xia smiled.

Su Yuan sighed inwardly. She liked Xia—not romantically, but with admiration for her elegant strength. The thought of losing her to someone else was painful.

She introduced them: “Gao Jun—clever, resourceful, decent‑looking. If you want a boyfriend, he’s suitable. Yehao—handsome, but mysterious, not trustworthy. I wouldn’t recommend him.”

Xia chuckled. “Do you think I’m desperate for a man. You’re biased. Don’t judge classmates with tinted glasses, especially someone you live with.”

She patted Su Yuan’s shoulder. “You’re excellent too. No need to be jealous.”

“Jealous of him?” Su Yuan was startled. She remembered once feeling competitive with Yehao, but that had faded as their friendship grew.

Meanwhile, in the student activity center north of campus, the anime club gathered.

The door burst open. “Children, your queen has returned!”

Lan Qiuzhu strode in, eyes shining.

“Why is it dark? Saving electricity?”

“Don’t be ridiculous. We don’t pay the bills,” a girl scoffed.

“Then why no lights.”

“The breaker tripped.”

“Fix it!”

“We can’t.”

Lan Qiuzhu groaned. “How can I entrust the club to you if you can’t even fix a breaker.”

Laughter rippled. She glared. “Stop laughing. We must uphold the anime club. Have you found new talent?”

A plump boy stepped forward. “After reviewing 122 applications, we selected 79 members, 18 with potential.”

“Gender ratio?”

“Three to one, men to women. Of the 18, twelve male, six female.”

“Saintly wisdom, President!”

Lan slammed the table. “Saintly my foot! Zhang Xin, as vice president, what’s your plan to strengthen us?”

He bowed. “We follow your lead.”

“You’ll drive me mad!”

She turned to Lan Baobao, the gentle strategist. “Your view?”

“Recruit more people,” Baobao said firmly.

Lan Qiuzhu nodded. “Talent is key. Did you recruit anyone?”

Her smug expression betrayed she had.

Zhang Xin and the others flattered her.

Lan Qiuzhu smiled proudly. “Today I found a gem in the library. I’m working to bring her into our anime club.”

“Who?”

“Su Yuan, a sophomore. Heard of her?”

The members frowned. No one recognized the name.

Then a gossip‑loving girl spoke. “Su Yuan… isn’t she the one rumored with Xiao Yiyan?”

Lan Qiuzhu snorted. “So what. Do we fear Xiao’s fans? They’re a disorganized mob. How dare they smear someone I’ve chosen.”

The members sweated. Their own club wasn’t exactly disciplined either—it was Lan Qiuzhu’s personal kingdom.

Zhang Xin declared, “If our president has chosen her, we must defend her!”

“But… is Su Yuan male or female?”

“Female!” Lan Qiuzhu said firmly.

The room fell silent.
