Chapter 6 Chapter 6: Was She Truly a Beauty?
Stepping out of the classroom, Su Yuan breathed in the fresh air. The open sky eased her mind. Judging by her exam performance, she would easily pass the make up test. Retaking the course was out of the question.
This was excellent news. She stretched, tucked her exam pen into her pocket, and passed the North Campus field. Cheers erupted nearby.
It was the sophomore versus junior football match. Wang Ping had mentioned it was a sports department event, both a campus activity and a tryout for the varsity team.
She decided to watch and headed toward the stands.
The game was in its seventieth minute, still zero to zero. Blue jerseys marked the sophomores, white marked the juniors. Rare to see such a match. Spectators roared as players sprinted under the scorching sun.
“Lu Chuan, go”
A sharp voice cut through the noise. Su Yuan turned to see Jiang Yuan, her class’s arts and sports delegate. Petite but curvy, she wore a sun hat, a high ponytail escaping its brim. Sweat beaded on her nose from shouting. Her face glowed with exertion.
“Jiang Yuan, ease up. It is sweltering” Su Yuan said kindly.
Jiang Yuan finally noticed her. “You are here too. Do not just sit there. Stand up and cheer for Lu Chuan” She yanked Su Yuan to her feet.
Su Yuan rubbed her nose, regretting the attention. Only ten minutes left. Under Jiang Yuan’s watchful eyes, she halfheartedly chanted until Lu Chuan scored. The game ended one to zero.
“Ahhh, Lu Chuan scored” Jiang Yuan threw her arms around Su Yuan. “Oops” She pulled back, flustered. “Got carried away”
“Understandable” Su Yuan replied flatly. Lu Chuan was their class’s heartthrob, sun kissed and handsome. Jiang Yuan cheered not just as delegate but for him personally.
“It is not what you think” Jiang Yuan’s cheeks flushed. “I meant as delegate, I am happy for a classmate’s success. What is wrong with that”
Su Yuan met her gaze calmly. Jiang Yuan scrutinized her face for mockery but found only sincerity.
“Lu Chuan is coming over” Jiang Yuan grabbed a towel and rushed off. Watching her tiptoe to dab his sweat, Su Yuan felt a pang of envy. If I had his build, his athleticism, would anyone do that for me.
Then she remembered her uncertain body. A quiet sigh escaped her.
Near the basketball court, she spotted Ji Yehan, Gao Jun, Wang Ping, and Yang Xiaowei playing. Their graceful shots, mesmerizing dribbles.
Su Yuan felt sick. Did she now envy every display of masculine ease. Enough. The dorm was empty. Time to examine herself properly. She walked toward her building.
In the bathroom mirror, she stared at her naked reflection. Is this really me. How can I look so different from yesterday.
Her face was familiar. But her body was no longer his. Where wild vitality once lived beneath dark curls, now lay something delicate and foreign. A weapon of mass destruction, they said, capable of toppling dynasties.
An emptiness yawned inside her. Utterly alien. Insistent.
Her frame had always been slender, almost delicate. Now it made sense. As if destiny had prepared this form all along.
Her chest held the faintest swell. So subtle, yet undeniable. Pressing lightly, she felt tenderness beneath the skin, a quiet insistent life.
Her waist tapered smoothly, hips marking a boundary between flat plane and the soft curve of her backside.
Parting her legs, she studied the delicate folds in the mirror. Shy, vulnerable, glistening. Like a petal too fragile to touch.
A curious finger brushed the surface. Sensation exploded, tingling, electric, racing up her spine. She shivered.
Stay calm. This is my body. I must know it.
Holding her breath, she examined the tiny translucent membrane. Is this the hymen. That scrap of flesh society worships. How many girls feared its rupture. How many grooms wept to see it on their wedding sheets.
Her breath grew heavy. Sticky moisture coated her fingers.
Su Yuan froze. This body was too sensitive. She dressed quickly and left the bathroom.
On the desk lay her registered student ID. She flipped it open to the stamp that read September 5 Registered.
Her old photo stared back. But staring at that stamp, she wondered. With this body, can my life follow the path I planned.
“Ugh, what do I do now”
She fixated on the character male printed on the ID. Two hopes warred inside her. That this was all a nightmare. Or that the character would magically change to female.
Ten minutes passed. No change. No miracle.
Su Yuan collapsed onto the desk and wailed.
