Chapter 52 Chapter 52: Matchmaker

Jan 16, 2026 857 words

“Achoo!”

A sudden but light sneeze broke the silence of the campus.

Xia Linfei stepped out of the lab building, caught off guard.

She had worked all morning, missing lunch again. Smiling wryly, she felt like a donkey circling a millstone—endlessly busy. Opening her pink parasol, she walked alone toward the cafeteria.

The sun blazed overhead, its glare turning the marble pavement into a sheet of white. Through the green sunshade glass above the lab’s entrance, beams of light spilled into the hall.

Because lunch hour had passed, the road was empty—only her parasol moved alone.

Behind the building, trees and walls cast shade. Cool wind from the river brushed her skin.

Her leather shoes tapped rhythmically against the ground. Suddenly, she saw someone ahead, struggling with bags.

It was Su Yuan. Curious, Xia Linfei quickened her pace. “Su Yuan, why so many things?”

“Ah, Summer Jie!!”

Su Yuan’s face lit with relief. She had shopped with Hongye, eaten a quick meal, then rushed back for class. The bags were heavy, regret useless now.

“Summer Jie, help me carry these!”

“Sure. But… let me see what you bought.” She snatched a bag playfully.

Bags tumbled to the ground.

The bag contained clothes Hongye had bought for Su Yuan. “Give it back! Don’t take it out!”

Too late. Xia Linfei’s mischievous eyes sparkled.

Su Yuan sighed. She wasn’t worried about her gender being discovered—Linfei would soon know from the chromosome test anyway. Better to accept it calmly.

Linfei laughed, pulling out the clothes: black jeans, a white hooded T‑shirt, and a coffee‑red jacket. Light and practical.

“Women’s clothes?” she teased.

Su Yuan ignored her, relieved the style was unisex.

“Don’t sulk. So petty.” Linfei set the clothes down.

She found a small box inside—a pendant. “Clothes with accessories. This set is worth six hundred. Nicely matched. Did you strike it rich?”

“Six hundred?” Su Yuan was surprised.

She smiled slyly. “Yes, I made a windfall. Oh, by the way, Gao Jun asked me to ask you something.”

“What?” Linfei asked calmly.

Su Yuan grinned. “He likes you. If he pursued you, would he succeed?”

In truth, Gao Jun hadn’t said this. Su Yuan wanted to test Linfei’s reaction, maybe warn Gao Jun if needed.

Linfei studied her, smiling faintly. “So you want to play matchmaker?”

“Of course. If there’s hope, I’ll be the matchmaker!”

“You’re not qualified. Tell Gao Jun if he wants an answer, he must ask me himself.”

Su Yuan chuckled. “Fine. I’ll tell him. Where should he find you?”

“Tomorrow, in the biochemistry office. If he dares, let him come. By the way, did I do anything embarrassing when drunk?”

“No. You just slept. We took you home.”

“Really?”

“Why lie? You were quiet, unlike most drunk people.”

“That’s good.” Linfei sighed in relief. “I’ll make up for the missed dinner next time.”

Su Yuan teased. “We know you’re rich. If you want to eat with Gao Jun, just say so.”

Linfei laughed. “You brat!”

Su Yuan dodged, saying nothing more. Whether Linfei was a rich heiress didn’t matter.

Later, after class, Su Yuan biked to tutor Tang Wen.

Back at dorm 330, lights glowed. Ji Yehao and Gao Jun were busy. They knew Su Yuan had shopped heavily.

This semester, she had grown frugal. Suddenly buying so much surprised them.

“Did Su Yuan rob someone?” Gao Jun muttered.

Yehao smiled silently.

“Aren’t you curious? Let’s open her wardrobe.”

Yehao frowned. “No. That’s her privacy.”

“Privacy?” Gao Jun laughed, recalling his failed attempt to peek at Linfei’s computer. Karma had come quickly.

“I’ll see what she bought!” He reached for the wardrobe.

“Hey, what are you doing!!”

Su Yuan returned just in time, scolding him.

Gao Jun froze, guilty. “Nothing… just curious. Did you rob someone?”

“You robbed someone!” she retorted.

She carefully arranged her bags, hiding the lingerie securely. Then she pulled out a bag of men’s clothes, tossing a piece to Yehao. “This is for you.”

A black sports outfit—cool and bold. She had bought two, but decided to gift one to Yehao. He often treated her to meals; friendship required reciprocity.

Yehao was surprised but pleased. “Thanks!”

Su Yuan smirked. She wouldn’t admit it was because the outfits were too similar.

“Hey, why him and not me?” Gao Jun complained.

Su Yuan glared. “What yours?”

“Don’t be biased! It’s unfair.”

Su Yuan smiled slyly. “So you want one? Fine. But who tried to snoop in my wardrobe? If you treat me to a month of meals, I’ll buy you clothes too.”

“A month? Friends shouldn’t talk money.”

So quick to back down. Su Yuan sneered. “Yehao treated me many times. Giving him clothes is fair.”
