Chapter 105: I Don'T Want To Play The Obsessively Possessive Role Anymore
Her pupils, originally clear from the sedative, gradually took on an eerie red hue.
To claim that caring smile, that warm embrace, and even her entire being, for herself!
But then, the System in her mind spoke.
Host, is it truly just Su Tao herself you desire?
Did she truly want a substitute for her ex-girlfriend?
No, not at all.
She merely wished for someone to love her.
Perhaps not someone exceptionally brilliant, someone with their own flaws and little tempers, but someone who wouldn't betray her, someone who simply loved her.
And as fate would have it, having merged with the original owner's memories, Su Tao was precisely the one among those girls whose presence made it impossible to look away.
Is possession truly love?
But what if Su Tao didn't love her back?
Chi Xiaocheng silently lowered her head, drifted listlessly to the living room for a sip of water, then slowly climbed back into bed.
The sedative offered only a temporary reprieve. She curled up in bed, pulling the blanket tight, while the new brown bear pillow sat forlornly to one side.
It could not, after all, offer its owner any solace.
It could only lie splayed against the wall, its empty gaze fixed on the small girl who nervously hugged herself, curled up and trembling.
Ding-a-ling~
Her phone rang.
Still curled beneath the covers, Chi Xiaocheng asked, “System, whose call is it?”
Host, it’s the female lead, Su Tao.
Chi Xiaocheng poked her head out, then quickly drew it back.
She dared not answer. She was afraid.
Afraid Su Tao would call and say she was only pretending to love her.
Even though she knew Su Tao wouldn’t say such a thing, the memories swirling in her mind choked her like a nightmare.
What she truly cared about, in the end, wasn’t herself.
It had always been the original Xiaocheng, whose place had long since been usurped.
And wasn't she, herself, constantly playing the part of that well-behaved, likable Xiaocheng?
Outside the window, the snow fell heavier and heavier.
The snow was thick, making it difficult even for bicycle wheels on the road. Puffs of misty breath escaped her lips, accompanied by faint, anxious gasps. Her dark hair was already turning white with snow.
The journey, usually fifteen minutes, ended up taking almost half an hour.
Su Tao dismounted her bicycle and hurried into the residential complex.
Just as she reached the entrance, she bumped into Chi Song, who was on his way out.
Chi Song paused, surprised. “Tao, why are you here?”
It must be two in the morning.
Su Tao shivered, her body cold, and anxiously asked, “Brother Chi Song, is Xiaocheng home?”
“She should be sleeping in her room. Has something happened?”
Hearing Chi Song, Su Tao let out a breath of relief. “Nothing much. Xiaocheng called and said she missed me, so I came to check on her.”
Chi Song gave a helpless smile. “My little sister, truly. Saying something like that in the middle of the night.”
But seeing that Su Tao had actually come, the joy in his eyes was undeniable. He slowly said, “She’s in her room. Go on in yourself; I have something to attend to, so I’ll be heading out now.”
Something to do at this late hour?
Watching Chi Song’s hurried departure, Su Tao didn’t think much of it.
She changed her shoes, then quickly approached Chi Xiaocheng’s bedroom door. Light spilled from beneath the door; Xiaocheng must still be awake.
Su Tao gently pushed the door open, her voice barely a whisper.
Not seeing Chi Xiaocheng in the room made her heart clench. But then she spotted a lump beneath the covers on the bed, and her anxious tension eased considerably.
It seemed nothing was amiss.
The abrupt call and unusual questions had kept her on edge the entire way. Her cycling pace hadn’t been fast; she’d wished she could just hoist the bike onto her shoulder and run all the way.
Now, it seemed, she must be asleep? The lights were still on.
Su Tao didn’t want to disturb Chi Xiaocheng. She turned to switch off the light and leave, but her sharp eyes suddenly caught sight of a syringe on the floor.
Her pupils contracted slightly. The tip of the syringe was stained with a trace of undried orange juice, clearly having been used just moments ago. A label on it read three characters: Sedative.
Su Tao’s expression shifted instantly. She couldn't help but recall Dr. Lin’s words.
Mild schizophrenia!
It had already reached the point of needing sedative injections. Was it truly just mild?
Su Tao stood before the bed, quietly gazing at the huddled mass beneath the quilt.
What should she do?
Wake her and ask what happened?
Sit by the bed, quietly watch over her, waiting for her to wake, see her, and then comfort her?
Suddenly, a helpless whimper escaped from beneath the covers. “Tao... don’t leave me…”
Was she having a nightmare?
Su Tao’s gaze softened instantly, and she unbuttoned her coat. She hadn’t even had time to take off her pajamas at the dorm, so now she wouldn't need to change clothes at all.
Gently pulling back the blanket, Su Tao saw Chi Xiaocheng curled into a tight ball. She knew this was a form of self-protection stemming from extreme insecurity.
Perhaps sensing the cold from the lifted blanket, Chi Xiaocheng turned towards Su Tao and slowly opened her eyes. Meeting that gentle gaze, she froze completely.
Su Tao smiled sweetly. “Had a nightmare? There’s no need to be afraid, I’m right here.”
She slipped into the bed, then gently reached out and embraced the stunned Chi Xiaocheng.
It wasn’t until she was enveloped by warmth and a reassuring, faint scent that Chi Xiaocheng finally came to her senses, her voice trembling with disbelief. “Tao... Tao, how are you here?”
She was afraid this was a dream.
Even though she didn't know what had happened.
But that didn’t stop Su Tao from comforting the insecure girl in her arms. She feigned thoughtfulness and said, “Xiaocheng, you hung up so quickly, so of course I came to answer your question.”
Chi Xiaocheng’s voice, filled with bewilderment, came. “Question?”
“Yes, indeed,” Su Tao said. “Didn’t you say I hesitated when I answered that I loved you?”
“Silly girl, I wasn’t hesitating about whether I loved you or not.”
“I was hesitating about just how much I loved you~”
Almost completely yielding to her unspoken wish, Su Tao’s voice was soft and caring, her arms wrapped around her, as if to express her love through her actions.
Was this kind of love real? Did it matter if it was real or false?
Chi Xiaocheng simply wanted to hear those words, wanted that kind of anchor. She yearned and longed for someone to love her, nothing more.
Su Tao could feel the small girl in her arms tightly gripping her clothes the moment she spoke those words. Her faint trembling gradually subsided. Her small head nestled against her, her breathing steadily grew calm.
Su Tao reached out and gently stroked Chi Xiaocheng’s head. “Xiaocheng, hold me a little tighter.”
That way, you won’t be afraid.
That way, you can feel my warmth even more.
That way, you won’t think I’ll abandon you.
Even if the love I profess is merely an act, I will remain by your side. It has always been this way, and it won’t change in the future.
The small figure in her arms finally stirred, clinging to her like an octopus, making it somewhat difficult for Su Tao to breathe.
Nevertheless, she could indeed feel the heartbeat within her embrace gradually settling.
She didn't know how much time had passed when Chi Xiaocheng, nestled in her arms, timidly asked, “Tao, if I’m not sick.”
—If I’m not obsessively possessive.
“If I’m well-behaved.”
—If I no longer play the obsessively possessive role and pressure you, but instead obediently listen to you.
“Will you always stay by my side?”
