Chapter 339 - Who'S The One Crashing?
In a blink, it was the day of the hypnosis.
February 24th, with only three days left until school started.
To be honest, Chi Xiaocheng hadn't had a good three days. Dongfang Wen was a true master, exerting significant pressure on her in every aspect. Even though she hadn't taken the emotion-dulling pills, she had upgraded her Ultimate Acting several times to cope with Dongfang Wen, and her emotional reserves were already at rock bottom.
She resorted to sending a threatening message to Si Chen, then compiled a new batch of information that would be helpful to him, enabling him to better secure the Si family in Jiuzhou City.
With a combination of stick and carrot tactics, she managed to wring out a bit of emotional value from Si Chen.
Only 340 points remained.
She could still use the last 300 emotional points to purchase an acting card.
Regarding this, a slight worry crossed her face. "Xiao Hei, this Dongfang Wen really knows his stuff. Si Chen told me that once breakfast digests this morning, the hypnosis will begin around noon."
"I don't have amnesia. The memories from my past life, which were blocked due to personal issues, all returned during my first lucid dream. You're aware of this."
"When he tries to hypnotize me, I won't be able to fall asleep. And then Taotao will be right there. Won't everything be ruined?"
She had many plans, even considering being hypnotized into a dream, then immediately activating her Ultimate Acting upon waking to get through that final stage.
She hadn't expected that old geezer to be so formidable.
He could even verify the hypnosis effect by checking memories!
No wonder when he had previously explained a bunch of hypnosis methods, he had specifically paused for a moment to give her time to think and react when talking about the dream-entering method.
It turned out he was already setting a trap for her back then.
Xiao Hei, naturally aware of all this, simply sat calmly nearby, reading a book. Her slender index finger, encased in a silk glove, pointed to a page as she calmly said, "Then just use your Ultimate Acting to pretend to be asleep. Just fake falling asleep under hypnosis."
Chi Xiaocheng's mouth twitched. "I can fake anything else, but pretending to be asleep is the easiest to get caught at, isn't it? If they observe my breathing, they'll know what's going on."
"Besides, pretend to be asleep for how many hours?"
Doing something for such a long time is torturous.
She would have to concentrate intently on faking sleep.
You're asking the impossible.
Xiao Hei closed her book and looked at Chi Xiaocheng. "That old guy probably already figures you're faking it. He really does have some tricks up his sleeve. Luckily, Xiao Ningning reacted quickly and declined their invitation, otherwise, you truly wouldn't be able to hide it."
"But as it stands, the hypnosis is about to begin, and you have no other choice but to pretend to be asleep."
"Unless you find a way to punch yourself into unconsciousness during the hypnosis."
Chi Xiaocheng rubbed her chin. "What if I convert my emotional points into powerful sleeping pills? Then I'd truly fall asleep, and upon waking, I'd only have to rely on Intermediate Acting."
Xiao Hei: "You'll still have monitoring equipment attached to you. How would you hide using drugs from them?"
"Hiss!"
Chi Xiaocheng took a sharp intake of breath. "Even if I pretend to be asleep, my heart rate has to mimic real sleep, with no significant fluctuations or strange patterns."
This will be the ultimate test of Ultimate Acting!
Now, Su Tao was also awaiting the results of the hypnosis, and no one could help her.
The old feeling of helplessness welled up again.
More importantly, Chi Xiaocheng hadn't seen the attitude she wanted from Su Tao these past few days.
Her status-viewing glasses weren't on her.
But she knew that the barrier between Su Tao and herself still hadn't been broken.
Whether or not to choose to restore memories was no longer something to fret over.
What she needed to consider was how to get through this difficult stage of faking sleep and pretending to be hypnotized.
Suddenly, Xiao Hei placed the book on the table and transformed into a swarm of light butterflies, dissipating.
Seeing this, Chi Xiaocheng knew someone was coming.
The next second, sure enough, there were three knocks on the ward door, and then a young nurse entered. "Miss Chi, Professor Dongfang asked me to bring you these two instruments. He's waiting for you on the tenth floor."
Chi Xiaocheng glanced at the two items in the nurse's hand.
One was for wearing on the wrist, to detect pulse.
The other was likely for attaching to her chest.
"Okay."
Chi Xiaocheng responded, and the nurse proactively stepped out of the room to wait.
Chi Xiaocheng looked at the two instruments. To be honest, she really wanted to use hacking techniques to try and bypass them.
Unfortunately, she had no tools. The wrist device had no power connection, and the one for her chest had a wire extending out, clearly meant to connect to other machines.
"I'll just have to tough it out with Ultimate Acting."
Chi Xiaocheng sighed, but she couldn't help but feel that...
...this Ultimate Acting wasn't as reliable as Intermediate Acting.
The latter had helped her through many difficult situations.
The former, even before it truly began, already showed subtle signs of going awry.
Once the instruments were attached, she nervously stepped out, following the young nurse to the elevator and up to the tenth floor, then entered a rather large lounge.
She glanced inside and saw only Dongfang Wen, who was adjusting a machine beside a sofa chair.
He greeted her, "Xiaochengzi, you're here. Come sit down and relax for a bit. No need to be nervous; it's just a matter of sleeping."
Chi Xiaocheng looked around. "Is it just you, Grandpa Dongfang?"
"Of course, it's just me," Dongfang Wen continued adjusting the machine without looking up. "Hypnosis is just about getting you to sleep. You'll naturally see your lost memories in your dream, and once you wake up, you'll know the truth about your amnesia."
"Why would we need a bunch of people watching? Nobody's bored enough to stare at you while you sleep."
Only then did he look up, still with that reassuringly kind smile. More importantly, his casual tone and manner, as if discussing something as routine as eating or drinking, made one instinctively relax just by observing him.
In reality, the trio of Su Tao, Dongfang Yang, and Si Chen were hiding in another partitioned room, nervously watching the lounge's surveillance feed.
They weren't physically present, but there were several hidden cameras in the room.
Aside from Si Chen, who was in on the secret, the other two, despite their great trust in Chi Xiaocheng, couldn't help but feel nervous about what was about to happen.
Dongfang Wen connected the instruments to Chi Xiaocheng. "Xiaochengzi, in a moment, just slowly empty your mind according to my instructions. The normal time to fall into a hypnotic sleep is between 30 seconds and 5 minutes."
"The more severe your amnesia, the faster you'll fall asleep."
Naturally, if it took longer than five minutes, it would prove there was no amnesia at all!
With the instruments connected, and after another round of psychological counseling and suggestions to help Chi Xiaocheng relax completely, Dongfang Wen pulled out a delicate pocket watch.
Its construction was unknown, but a mere glance at it caused a faint sensation of dizziness.
"Relax. You don't even need to concentrate too hard; just look at this pocket watch."
Dongfang Wen's voice was soft, kind, and so gentle it was comforting.
The pocket watch began to swing rhythmically.
In an instant, Chi Xiaocheng felt herself enter a peculiar state.
Time began to stretch out, a moment feeling like an eternity.
She felt the entire world grow hazy.
Unlike the symptoms of dizziness, her whole body began to feel weak.
In her mind, it was as if something was being drawn out.
Yet, only ten seconds had passed during this whole time. Dongfang Wen hadn't even begun to use his verbal cues to induce Chi Xiaocheng into hypnosis when the girl on the sofa suddenly thumped and slumped over.
At this, Dongfang Wen was completely dumbfounded.
Up until now, he had been 95% confident that Chi Xiaocheng was faking her amnesia and would absolutely not be hypnotized by him.
But what was happening now?
I've only just begun the hypnosis; I haven't even spoken, so how did you fall asleep?!
Dongfang Wen couldn't help but begin to doubt his professional judgment. "Could her amnesia be, truly severe?"
