Chapter 98 - Mild Schizophrenia

“Acting?”

Everyone but Doctor Lin looked towards Doctor Chen.

The latter pushed up her glasses and nodded, saying, “Naturally, it’s just a feeling. I can’t draw a conclusion. Psychologists like Doctor Lin and myself, who tend to specialize, actually each have our own diagnostic methods.”

Doctor Chen continued, “When I face patients, I prefer to guide them to chat casually about topics they care about most, approaching them as a friend to help them relax their subconscious self-protection, and then analyze the patient through their language, micro-expressions, and actions.”

Doctor Lin nodded, “Yes, personally, I lean more towards aggressive probing, using lies and indirect questions to bypass the patient’s subjective, protective answers, thereby dissecting their innermost thoughts.”

Doctor Chen went on, “It’s through this hour-plus conversation that I feel Miss Chi herself is very conflicted, especially when Miss Su was mentioned.”

“I steered her topic, mentioning, ‘Miss Chi, your relationship with Miss Su is really good, isn’t it?’ At that moment, she gave me three distinctly contradictory reactions.”

“The first type was yearning, or perhaps aspiration—wanting to become someone like Miss Su, or wanting to possess someone like Miss Su.”

“The second type was the calmness she deliberately put on. I’m convinced she was acting, putting on the part of a normal friend to conceal that first type of yearning and aspiration.”

“I’m unsure what the third, deeper emotion is. Her emotions were slightly unstable, and I couldn't choose to delve deeper. But if we were to explain it with three personalities…”

“The first is the self-personality.”

“The second is the surface personality.”

“The third is the latent personality.”

“She tried to hide her self-personality by acting as her surface personality, but didn’t realize there was also a latent personality.”

Doctor Chen pushed up her glasses. “Of course, this is just a hypothesis to help you all understand better. She doesn’t actually have three personalities. What I meant by her giving me a very contradictory feeling is precisely this.”

“And her immense pressure stems from unease and anxiety. Why the unease, and what is the anxiety about? Before we delve deeper, perhaps some of you here know more than I do.”

After speaking, Doctor Chen took a slight step back, signifying that the key points of her diagnosis had been laid out.

Any remaining details that were important but not crucial would be written into the diagnostic report later.

Dongfang Yang looked utterly bewildered.

But Su Tao and Si Chen could understand a bit.

Doctor Chen and Dongfang Yang didn't know Chi Xiaocheng had obsessive tendencies.

In Su Tao’s eyes, what Miss Chi called her hidden personality was her obsessive side.

She herself didn't realize her obsessive tendencies; outwardly, she presented as normal. Only when Su Tao was mentioned would this obsessive side emerge.

In her view, Doctor Chen’s diagnosis was largely accurate; it was only due to insufficient information that she offered the idea of "three personalities."

As for acting out a certain person, that was merely a misjudgment caused by the sense of disconnect between her normal and obsessive states.

Su Tao glanced at Si Chen beside her.

She noticed the bespectacled man, who had also studied psychology, looked thoughtful.

Su Tao looked at Doctor Lin. “Doctor Lin, what’s your take?”

Doctor Lin turned to get her notes from the table, and using the brief moment of turning her back to the others, she glanced at Si Chen.

Noticing Si Chen’s gaze, an idea formed in her mind.

She turned back with her notes and began, “I actually don’t quite agree with Doctor Chen’s view.”

Dongfang Yang and Su Tao were both taken aback.

Doctor Lin flipped through her notes. “I did sense the contradictions Doctor Chen spoke of, but the conclusion about acting as a certain person is overly subjective for Doctor Chen’s diagnostic method.”

“The source of Miss Chi’s contradictions mainly lies with Miss Su.”

“During the diagnosis, I asked her about her story with Miss Su, from childhood, through middle and high school, and now college. Miss Chi has no friends whatsoever besides Miss Su.”

“Coupled with her past bullying experiences, this is a long-term source of her unease.”

“And recently, due to a quarrel, Miss Chi and Miss Su’s relationship was strained for a while, and the contradictions emerged during this period.”

“On one hand, she cares deeply about Miss Su, treating Miss Su like family, even more important than family; on the other hand, she’s afraid of going too far and upsetting Miss Su, which might lead to abandonment.”

“It’s like children trying to please their parents by following their ideas. On the surface, they might pretend to be good children to receive praise, but behind the scenes, they show a different side.”

Her words earned the approval of everyone present.

Even Doctor Chen nodded thoughtfully. “I indeed hadn't considered the factors of what happened between them.”

Su Tao looked at Doctor Lin. “So, the reason Xiaocheng acts so… contradictory, is that it?”

Her words held a deeper meaning.

She was asking Doctor Lin, who knew the inside story.

Could it be because of this that Xiaocheng became so obsessive?

At this point, Doctor Lin shared a speculation of hers. “Personally, I believe Miss Chi has mild schizophrenia.”

“Wait a minute…” Dongfang Yang was more confused than he could possibly be. He massaged his forehead, seemingly trying his hardest to process it. “Just now it was three personalities, and now it’s schizophrenia?”

Si Chen, beside him, muttered exasperatedly, “The three personalities were a hypothesis to help you understand better. And it’s mild schizophrenia. If you’re not going to use your head, don’t butt in.”

Dongfang Yang glared at Si Chen. “What, so you understand?”

Si Chen calmly pushed up his glasses. “I also studied psychology. Doctor Lin even tutored me for a while.”

Dongfang Yang was speechless for a moment and looked expectantly at Su Tao. “Su Tao, I…”

Su Tao’s mind was completely focused on the schizophrenia Doctor Lin had mentioned. “Dongfang Yang, if you don’t understand, why don’t you take a break?”

Dongfang Yang’s face stiffened.

He dejectedly squatted in a corner, drawing circles.

Doctor Lin continued, “As Doctor Chen mentioned about the contradictions, her mental state is actually unstable. Society, family, and environment are continuously putting pressure on her.”

She looked at Su Tao as she spoke. “Has she recently experienced a severe emotional blow?”

Su Tao nodded softly. “Yes.”

It was that incident in the basement.

Doctor Lin glanced at everyone and proceeded with an in-depth analysis based on this blow.

Her words made even Doctor Chen nod. “What Doctor Lin said was reasonable.”

Doctor Lin added, “However, my analysis also includes a bit of personal subjective speculation. If possible, it would be best to find more opportunities for us to interact with Miss Chi.”

The preliminary relief methods, therapy, and medication assistance would all be written in the subsequent diagnostic report.

After bidding farewell to everyone, Su Tao then hurried into an office she had arranged with Si Chen.

Doctor Lin and he were already waiting.

Dongfang Yang needed to play a part, allowing Doctor Chen to conduct a normal psychological diagnosis. Meanwhile, Doctor Lin was to provide a diagnosis specifically targeting Chi Xiaocheng’s unhealthy obsession!

This was also what Su Tao had previously agreed upon with the two of them.

As soon as she entered the door, Su Tao quickly asked, “Doctor Lin, what’s the situation? Is it true about the schizophrenia? Does Xiaocheng really have these obsessive tendencies? Is there truly a chance for treatment?” Her face was filled with anxiety.
