Chapter 66 Chapter 66 Brother Returns
Chapter 66 Brother Returns
The night was as dark as ink. While Chi Xiaocheng worried about the psychologist, in Litchi City, Chi Song had already bought his high-speed train ticket back to Jiuzhou City.
“Brother Long, I’ve come to say goodbye.”
Chi Song entered the hall, a jacket draped over his shoulders, and shook the snowflakes from his hair. His heavily scarred face was somewhat unsettling.
Brother Long had only one ear, and like Chi Song, his face was covered in scars.
After glancing at Chi Song, he offered him a cigarette. “Are you really going back? To be honest, after this job, I was planning to promote you to the Fourth Hall. Leaving like this might draw criticism from others.”
Chi Song took the cigarette. Just as he reached for his lighter, Brother Long offered him a light. He exhaled a plume of smoke. “Brother Long, truth be told, I don’t care about that position. You know I’ve been fighting tooth and nail here for my younger sister. She usually never tells me when she’s in trouble, but this is the first time she’s asked for my help. As her older brother, I have to go back no matter what.”
A simple, honest smile appeared on his fierce face. “Years ago, I wronged my parents. I broke with them and ran off to join the underworld. She’s the only sister I have left.”
“That’s true,” Brother Long flicked his cigarette. “How long will you be gone?”
“I’m not sure, but I should be back within half a month,” Chi Song smiled. “Just have Xiao Sixi take my place; he’s pretty sharp. But there’s one thing, Brother Long, you should be aware of.”
Chi Song’s expression turned more serious. “Didn’t we bust a number of illegal operations belonging to the Ye family last time? Their reach hasn't withdrawn yet. Recently, someone named Si contacted me and provided a lot of information about the Ye family.”
Brother Long raised an eyebrow. “They want to use us as their pawns?”
Chi Song nodded. “Most likely. These people from the Ye family were sent by Ye Liang. Whether to go for the kill, Brother Long, you’ll have to consider carefully.”
Brother Long scoffed. “In Litchi City, even a tiger must lie low for me. Even if we agree, other gangs won’t just stand by and watch their cake get divided. You just go back; you don’t need to worry about any of this.”
“Alright then,” Chi Song nodded. “I’ll take ten men with me. I’ll contact you, Brother Long, if anything comes up.”
“Leaving directly at this late hour?”
“Yes, I bought a high-speed train ticket.”
Brother Long looked at Chi Song in surprise. “Sonny, I haven’t treated you badly these past two years, have I? A few million isn’t enough for you to buy a car?”
Chi Song scratched his head awkwardly. “My younger sister has always been very frail. She suffered several mental traumas years ago. Remember that skilled doctor I met in my hometown? He said the treatment would cost a lot of money, so all the money I’ve earned these past two years has gone to him to help treat my sister.”
Brother Long frowned. “What kind of injury needs millions? You haven’t been conned, have you?”
“I don’t think so. He often tells me about my sister’s condition, and I’ve seen various photos. Last time I video-called my sister, she looked quite spirited.”
“Besides, isn’t money meant to be spent? My sister’s good complexion proves the money was well spent; it’s no big deal.”
“Fine,” Brother Long said, seeing the situation, and didn’t press further. Instead, he picked up a set of keys from the table and tossed them over. “And another thing, you’re a boss now, and you have plenty of subordinates under you. What kind of image are you projecting, taking your men home on a high-speed train?”
“Take my car back. Then have your men pick up two more vehicles. And don’t rush back; spend more time with your sister.”
“Okay, thank you, Brother Long!”
“Thanks for what? If you hadn’t taken that knife for me back then, I would’ve lost more than just an ear. Now get out of here. If you’re in a hurry to go back, don’t stand here getting sentimental with me.”
After sending Chi Song off, Brother Long lit another cigarette and tapped on the table.
Soon after, another subordinate entered. “Brother Long, what are your orders?”
“Send someone to investigate that doctor Chi Song mentioned, see what he’s all about. Also, aren’t there a few disabled fellows in the gang who keep saying they want to find some work?”
“Yes,” the subordinate nodded. “You sent them to guard the warehouse, but they said it’s too boring. They want to keep working like Deputy Hall Master Chi, saying that missing a hand or a leg is no hindrance.”
“A bunch of stubborn mules,” Brother Long flicked off his ash. “Send them to Chi Song’s hometown. Tell them to find some land there and farm it for their retirement. Their mission is to protect Chi Song’s parents. Now, get out.”
With that, Brother Long took another puff from his cigarette and looked out the window, his expression grim.
“Jiuzhou City is the Ye family’s stronghold… This won’t be easy.”
Time gradually passed. After a seven-hour journey, Chi Song and his ten subordinates drove into the borders of Jiuzhou City.
It was already 3 AM. The three subordinates sharing a car with Chi Song were tired, but a hint of anticipation showed on their faces.
“Brother Song, we’ll be at your place in half an hour. What’s your sister’s name? Is it Chengzi? When we get there, can I also be called 'Brother' by her?”
The man driving was dark-skinned, and his mood seemed very good. Chi Song laughed playfully. “Old Hei, if you dare to have any ideas about my younger sister, I’ll break your legs.”
“Heh, listen to you,” Liang Hei shrugged. “We’re brothers, so your younger sister is naturally my younger sister. I’m getting on in years and don’t have any family; I probably won’t find a wife. Can’t you even grant me this small wish of hearing our sister call me ‘Brother’?”
“Get lost. At your age, you’re old enough to be her uncle.”
“I’m only 28, why would I be an uncle? I’m still young!”
Chi Song said seriously, “Let’s get this straight beforehand. If you really see her, don’t mention anything about the gang, got it? The few of us brothers met while working hard and doing honest labor.”
“But speaking of which, I haven’t seen my younger sister in almost three years. I wonder how she is now. I just hope she doesn’t despise me for being disabled.”
As they chatted, they soon arrived back at the entrance of the residential complex.
Ever since Brother Long gave him this apartment, Chi Song had never once stayed in it. He had only asked Chi Xiaocheng to keep a room for him, filling it with a few personal items, waiting for his return.
Who knew that until now, he had never come back.
“Brother Song, we brothers will go to the hotel first.”
“Wait a moment!”
Chi Song narrowed his eyes from inside the car, stopping Liang Hei, who had been about to get out.
Liang Hei noticed Chi Song’s serious expression, flashed the headlights twice, and the doors of the other two cars, which had just opened, closed again.
“This place is being watched.”
Chi Song turned his head and looked at two burly men eating late-night snacks at a roadside stall not far away.
Across the road, a fellow wrapped in a padded jacket was sleeping on a bench.
They were obviously amateurs, their eyes and heads constantly glancing this way.
Liang Hei’s voice dropped slightly. “Only three people are visible in the open. They looked over as soon as we arrived. We just got to Jiuzhou City and we’re already being watched? That fast?”
“My younger sister is the one being watched!”
Chi Song’s face darkened. He had originally thought that what Chi Xiaocheng meant by being bullied was just some local thugs bothering her.
He hadn't expected the situation to be much more serious than he imagined.
“Brother Song, what should we do?”
