Chapter 21 Her Obsession, Born Of You

Drip-drop~ drip-drop~

The rain gradually lightened. Dongfang Yang closed his umbrella, shook off the water, and rushed into the girls' dormitory. Fortunately, the power was out, and he slipped in quickly, unnoticed.

After half an hour stuck in traffic and a call from Su Tao, he finally arrived. His mood was as gloomy as the dark clouds; he knew something very serious had happened tonight. It was also the first time he'd seen Su Tao so anxious. Yet, the person she was anxious about wasn't him! Moreover, he didn't even know what had happened, only that he'd been a mere tool all night. First, he watched Ye Liang show off; then, just when he finally had a chance to make his presence felt, he got stuck in traffic and couldn't help Su Tao at all. Now that he'd finally reached the school, he gets a call from Su Tao asking him to go to the girls' dormitory to help? And it was Chi Xiaocheng he was helping! He felt like nothing but a tool.

This made Dongfang Yang inexplicably jealous. Even though the object of his jealousy, Chi Xiaocheng, was a girl.

“But once tonight is over, Su Tao is bound to like me a lot more, right?” Dongfang Yang climbed the stairs, thinking with a touch of anticipation.

Then he reached the rooftop. Without even bothering with his umbrella, he hastily searched for Su Tao. Then, his smile froze.

Beneath the rain shelter, two beautiful girls were huddled together. Su Tao held the curled-up Chi Xiaocheng in her arms, as if afraid she might catch a cold, doing her best to embrace the small, delicate girl, and voluntarily exposing half of her own body to the rain to shield Chi Xiaocheng from the wind-blown drops. Both seemed to have fallen asleep from exhaustion, and water droplets had plastered their beautiful hair together.

Watching the two beautiful girls embrace, Dongfang Yang admitted. He felt a pang of envy. This kind of Mary Sue plot development should be for the male and female leads, right? What right did Chi Xiaocheng have? Could it be that I've got the wrong script?

Waves of emotion surged within him, but Dongfang Yang quickly woke Su Tao. "Su Tao, wake up. Don't sleep here, you'll catch a cold!"

Startled by a pat on her shoulder, Su Tao awoke abruptly. Subconsciously, she cried out, "Xiaocheng!" Feeling the warm, soft form in her arms, Su Tao felt much more at ease. "She's still here, that's all that matters."

This sight made Dongfang Yang's expression turn even fouler. His face contorted with jealousy! He had pursued Su Tao for three months and hadn't even held her hand!!! Fortunately, the darkness of night concealed his expression.

Dongfang Yang took a deep breath, calming himself, and consoled himself that Chi Xiaocheng and Su Tao were close, best friends, and a little intimacy was nothing. Girls are like that; it's perfectly normal. He extended his hand and pulled Su Tao up. "Let's go. We should head down now."

"Mm." Su Tao leaned against the wall, then looked at Chi Xiaocheng. "My legs are a bit numb. Could you please help with her?"

"No problem." Dongfang Yang crouched down, ready to pick up Chi Xiaocheng, but then he saw a smear of fresh red on the ground and his eyes widened.

"Blood?" He uttered a questioning sound and immediately noticed the chilling wounds on Chi Xiaocheng's arm. They spread continuously upwards from her wrist, only gradually lessening towards her elbow. Each seemed extremely deep, the marks clear. He took a deep breath and looked at Su Tao. "Is this what you meant by 'life in danger'? Did she try to kill herself?"

Su Tao was silent for a moment. "Let's take Xiaocheng to the hospital first. I'll explain later."

"Okay!"

Easily lifting Chi Xiaocheng, the two quickly went downstairs. After getting her into the car, they both finally breathed a sigh of relief. Dongfang Yang calmly started the ignition. "Let's take her to the nearest hospital. My private hospital is too far from here, and she has a high fever; I'm afraid something will happen if we delay."

Su Tao sat beside Chi Xiaocheng, holding her hand. "I hope we don't get stuck in traffic."

"If we get stuck again, I'll just have someone fly a plane over!" Dongfang Yang said fiercely, turning on the headlights and quickly driving away from the school.

It would still take some time to reach the hospital, and he couldn't help but glance at the rearview mirror. He saw Su Tao continuously tending to Chi Xiaocheng with tissues, first drying the water from her hair and neck, then wiping away the cold sweat beading on her. Her eyes filled with tenderness, her movements gentle.

Dongfang Yang pulled his gaze back and asked, "It'll be a few more minutes until we reach the hospital. Can you tell me what's going on now, and what happened with Chi Xiaocheng's injuries?"

Su Tao paused her actions, subconsciously licking her lips. The taste of blood in her mouth had gradually faded, but the sensation seemed etched into her soul. She said slowly, "My mind is also very confused. I haven't had much contact with Xiaocheng these past two months, so I don't know what happened to her. The injuries on her hands, she inflicted them herself."

After much thought, Su Tao still concealed the fact that Chi Xiaocheng had forcefully fed her blood. She was aware of Dongfang Yang's feelings for her. She was afraid that revealing such a chilling thing would make him react as violently as Ye Liang had. Yet, even half of such a story would be utterly horrifying.

Dongfang Yang had seen many strange things, but even so, his eyes showed some shock. "Are you saying Chi Xiaocheng has always had a tendency to self-harm?" Those dense, clustered wounds looked painful just to see. As he spoke, Dongfang Yang suddenly remembered something and said, "Wait a moment. Maybe it wasn't voluntary; perhaps she was forced."

"Forced?" Su Tao was taken aback. She knew that it had been Chi Xiaocheng's own will, and moreover, it was for her. But why would Dongfang Yang come to that conclusion?

Dongfang Yang explained, "Actually, yesterday, I had someone investigate what happened to Chi Xiaocheng these past two months. Perhaps without your protection, she's been having a difficult time these two months."

Su Tao frowned.

Dongfang Yang: "Leaving aside what she did against you, apart from those things, Chi Xiaocheng has actually been in a state of long-term bullying. Her home is nearby, right? Her high school isn't far either. Although she's entered university, her high school social circle hasn't changed. And since she commutes, she often used to be cornered by delinquent girls on her way home. And at school, there are a few people who got in through connections. Being bullied at school and then cornered on the way home—a fool like her would easily develop psychological trauma." Dongfang Yang sighed. "If she was forced, it wouldn't be strange for her to harm herself."

After hearing this, Su Tao gradually fell silent. Undoubtedly, Dongfang Yang had found a perfect excuse for her. Su Tao knew clearly that a large part of Chi Xiaocheng's transformation was due to herself. Before, she had subconsciously avoided what happened in the basement, unwilling to think about it.

But just now, holding Chi Xiaocheng. While waiting for Dongfang Yang under the rain shelter, feeling the delicate body in her arms gradually warm up, Su Tao calmly recalled what Chi Xiaocheng had said in the basement.

—Taotao, it was always you I loved!

—You always told me I was your most precious friend, your most important person, your favorite person!

—Since you told me all that, why did you betray me!

Leaning back in the seat, Su Tao felt a lump in her throat. She looked towards the overcast sky, and lightning seemed to descend along her gaze, telling her:

You gave her hope, guiding her thoughts; then, when she loved you, clung to you, and depended on you beyond remedy, you brought her despair. If that's the case, why do you still care about her?

Rain lashed against the windows, as if God's hand was knocking on the door, urging her to open it quickly and send Chi Xiaocheng away. The howling wind seemed to whisper in Su Tao's ear: "Rather than enduring this miserable life, the girl beside you might as well die and be done with it."
