Chapter 183 181. Windfall 【5/17】

Jan 16, 2026 1,312 words

An Han had never believed in things like money falling from the sky.

Just like the system—when reading novels, everyone wanted one, but when it actually landed on someone’s head, he became her.

In recent years, anti-fraud campaigns had been especially aggressive. Even the police ran livestreams, and everyone was promoting anti-scam awareness. If she still fell for something like this, she’d really be an idiot.

Besides, she was certain she hadn’t participated in any lottery or raffle.

“Let’s hear what he has to say first.”

An Han nodded. Even though she knew it was impossible, she still perked up her ears, eyes sparkling as anticipation quietly grew.

Maybe a windfall didn’t necessarily mean Wang Sheng’s bonus?

Even if I don’t remember entering a lottery, the system could’ve helped me draw one~

“Sir, due to the large amount of the prize, the winnings must be taxed according to law as incidental income.”

Everyone rolled up their sleeves, ready to start cursing.

“Don’t worry, sir. We’ll handle the incidental income tax for you. You just need to pay us a one-thousand-yuan service fee…”

An Han’s face darkened. “Where am I supposed to get a thousand yuan?”

“Sir, you can download an app on your phone…”

Although she had already expected it, when it actually turned out this way, she still felt her intelligence had been insulted.

Such a crude scam—how did they even dare to use it?

“WDNMD!” Chen Junjie was the first to lose it, immediately launching into a tirade. “What’s wrong with your brain?!”

“Sir, please listen to me—”

Long Xing joined in as well. “Shut up, ugly dumbass!”

The two of them unleashed a torrent of abuse at An Han’s phone. Especially Chen Junjie—normally sharp-tongued to begin with, and having practiced bickering with An Han, his mouth was lightning-fast, spraying insults like a machine gun until the other side couldn’t get a word in.

The scammer tried to keep up the act for a bit, but in the end, under the barrage of curses, he hung up.

“What a problem,” An Han nodded emphatically. “A psycho! Even tried to trick me into taking out a loan!”

Looks like the system really was stingy—the reward for Task Two was less than a thousand yuan.

What the hell was I even expecting?

She sighed and stood up. “Alright, alright, show’s over.”

“Let’s go.”

“Damn, that felt so good just now.”

Chen Junjie was still basking in his victory, bragging nonstop. “Did you see that scammer? He couldn’t say a single word after I cursed him out!”

An Han silently rolled her eyes. “You’re proud of cursing someone out…”

“I was helping you, you know. Ungrateful.”

The group chatted and laughed as they reached the cafeteria entrance, but Long Xing suddenly stopped, looking at a huge cabinet by the door.

“An automatic vending machine?” He walked over and took a closer look, then realized. “It sells blind boxes.”

Chen Junjie strolled over with his hands in his pockets. “Brother Long! Blind boxes are also a scam.”

“Twenty yuan each—not expensive. I’ll draw one for fun.” Long Xing took out his phone to scan the code, smiling as he said, “The top prize is an iPhone 13. What if?”

“What ‘what if’…” An Han complained.

Blind box merchants never lose money. Even if there really was an iPhone 13, the odds were probably one in ten thousand.

But anything involving a draw made people excited—even if it was just for fun.

Just like watching Wang Sheng open CS:GO cases. Even though she didn’t know which weapons were valuable, she’d still get excited watching.

She leaned in as Long Xing pulled a yellow blind box out of the machine.

He opened it—it was a fairly well-made pair of earphones.

Long Xing seemed satisfied. He examined the small, delicate earphones and nodded. “I was just short on a pair. Twenty yuan for this isn’t a loss.”

But Chen Junjie couldn’t keep his mouth shut. “Brother Long, these probably cost three yuan wholesale. Isn’t this just charity?”

Long Xing’s expression stiffened. Chen Junjie awkwardly avoided his gaze. “Then… I’ll draw one too.”

Chen Junjie’s blind box contained a phone stand.

“This is even worse than the earphones! Damn it!”

Seeing them having fun, An Han couldn’t help but feel tempted. She leaned in eagerly. “Move aside, move aside, I’m drawing one too!”

“Draw my ass. It’s just scamming idiots!”

“Brother Long, he’s calling you out!”

“I’m calling myself stupid…” Chen Junjie sighed lifelessly.

At least the earphones were something Long Xing actually needed. As for the phone stand, Chen Junjie had absolutely no use for it—throwing it in the trash would feel like a waste of space.

Wang Sheng, having opened plenty of boxes in games, had no interest in real-life blind boxes. He yawned and stood by, just accompanying them.

After scanning the code and paying, An Han eagerly pulled out her blind box.

She didn’t open it right away, instead weighing it in her hand. “This is it! It’s heavy! Definitely something good!”

“I bet fifty cents—it’s two decks of cards.”

She turned and glared at Chen Junjie. “Will it kill you to say something nice?”

An Han carefully opened the blind box, but her expression suddenly froze.

“What is this?”

She slowly lifted her head, as if dreaming, and murmured, “Apple… 13…”

“Holy shit!”

“That’s insane!”

The sudden shout drew everyone’s attention in the cafeteria. Wang Sheng rushed over, craning his neck to look at the Apple packaging inside the box.

Soon, onlookers gathered around An Han, forming a large circle. One by one, they stretched their necks like geese, eager to witness the birth of a lucky god.

“It’s not really just playing cards, is it…” An Han swallowed and took out the Apple box, carefully inspecting it.

Her heart was racing.

“The plastic seal looks fine,” Wang Sheng pointed out.

“The box isn’t dirty either. Looks unopened,” Long Xing added. “Hurry up and open it to see what it really is.”

Chen Junjie muttered unwillingly, “Double or nothing—still two decks of cards.”

The surrounding crowd urged An Han to open it. Finally unable to suppress her curiosity and excitement, she carefully peeled off the seal and opened the box.

Inside lay a pink iPhone 13.

Amid the wild cheers from the crowd, she still wasn’t fully convinced and pressed the power button with her thumb.

It turned on! Not Android! Brand new, not activated!

An Han looked up in delight, realizing that this might truly be the system’s “windfall” reward.

“You have to treat us to a meal today!”

“It’s even a Pro Max! Worth at least ten thousand!”

“So lucky! Let me touch your hand!”

“You sick freak!” An Han kicked Chen Junjie away. Though she wanted to maintain a calm, unshaken demeanor, she couldn’t help but smile brightly with joy, even wanting to hug the phone and jump in place all day.

Then, almost instinctively, she looked around. “Where’s Su Peng? Let him see my luck!”

Wang Sheng muttered, “Didn’t he leave a long time ago?”

“Huh?”

For some reason, the joy that had filled her moments ago suddenly faded, and even her smile stiffened slightly.
