Chapter 280 277. Confident and Righteous
Seeing An Han’s small face tensed, pale, and her brows locked in a tight frown, Su Peng felt an indescribable pang of heartache.
It was the dead of winter, yet tiny beads of sweat from the pain had broken out on the tip of her nose. Her calves trembled slightly as she walked, but her voice remained as bright and clear as usual when she spoke.
She even managed a small smile as she talked.
"Go back. I’ll be fine after I lie down for a bit."
An Han’s mind was occupied only with making her younger sister feel a sister’s love so thick it was inseparable.
Su Peng watched her with concern. Looking at her hands clutching her lower abdomen and her bloodless lips, he quickly realized the girl was just putting on a brave face and pretending to be fine.
This only made Su Peng’s heart ache more. In a moment like this, any man would be overcome by a powerful protective instinct, his mind filled only with the desire to pull An Han into his arms and soothe her pain.
With his protective streak hitting a fever pitch, Su Peng completely forgot about the presence of his future father-in-law. He stepped forward and firmly supported An Han by the arm.
"What are you doing? My dad is still right here!"
"It’s fine. At most, he’ll just give me a beating." He draped An Han’s arm over his shoulder, supporting her body, which weighed around a hundred pounds.
As their skin touched, he could clearly feel the slight tremors running through An Han’s body.
"Does it hurt that much? Are you sure we shouldn't go to the hospital?"
Su Peng was already prepared to ignore An Han’s protests and simply carry her to the hospital himself.
But An Han shook her head with absolute determination. "I’m fine. My stomach just caught a bit of a chill, really."
Unfortunately, her period had just ended a few days ago, and both Su Peng and her family knew her cycle... She had to act normal to avoid having to explain herself, and even more so to avoid being sent to the hospital.
However, this seemed to mislead Su Peng. Witnessing An Han’s "resilience," his heart throbbed with pain. "Don't force yourself."
"It’ll probably be better by noon. It’s nothing."
Once she got back and taught her sister a lesson—making her too scared to eat things blindly ever again—the pain should subside in a few hours.
An Han suddenly felt like the task she had chosen was like being roasted over a fire.
She really shouldn't have felt so much sympathy for her sister's menstrual cramps!
Su Peng had barely helped An Han walk ten meters before a figure came running up to their side.
Her father didn't even have time to care that Su Peng’s "dirty hands" were touching his daughter. He asked anxiously, "What’s wrong? Where does it hurt? Should I call an ambulance?"
"Dad, don't get overly worried like Su Peng, okay?"
An Han let out a helpless sigh. "I’m in my twenties. If something were actually wrong, I’d run to the hospital myself. Besides, you’re at home—it’s not like I’m the one paying the bill."
Her father thought she had a point, but he still wanted to stick to his guns.
"Besides, why are you out here?" An Han looked at her father, feigning ignorance. "Weren't you going to meet up with your friends?"
"I didn't trust this kid."
Heaven only knows what this brat was planning by sneaking out with An Han.
The father glanced at Su Peng. "Step aside, I’ll take over."
"Yes, Uncle." Su Peng had always behaved perfectly obediently in front of An Han’s parents.
The two had barely walked a thousand meters on their shopping trip, yet now An Han was being escorted back home by two men once again.
Her mother had already gone out to play mahjong and wouldn't be back to cook until near noon. Usually, her mother would go grocery shopping at this time, but since they had Su Peng as "manual labor" yesterday, they had bought a lot of fresh ingredients at once. Combined with the New Year’s supplies they had stocked up on, there was enough food to last a long time.
As soon as they reached home, An Han suddenly seemed a bit more spirited.
She pulled away from her father’s support, her eyes scanning the front and back halls of the first floor like they were on fire.
"Where’s my sister?"
"Maybe she went to play on your computer?"
Her father was busy pouring hot water for An Han, while Su Peng was rummaging through the medicine cabinet, trying to find some effective medication.
"Don't bother. I'll be fine after I use the bathroom."
An Han quickly kicked off her shoes and stomped upstairs aggressively.
The pain in her lower abdomen seemed to lessen slightly due to her sense of urgency.
Soon, she arrived at the bedroom door on the third floor. Opening it, she saw her sister sitting upright at the desk, seriously working on her homework stroke by stroke.
Glancing around her sister’s vicinity, An Han quickly spotted a thermos filled with warm water, but no soda bottles in sight.
"Sis!" Her sister turned around, excitedly fishing for a compliment. "I’ve been doing my homework the whole time! Can I play on the computer for a bit now?!"
She was all smiles, her large eyes flashing with anticipation.
Without a word, An Han walked over to the computer. She glanced at the mouse and keyboard, which had clearly been moved. She leaned down and pressed her palm against the computer tower under the desk.
The warmth of the casing immediately revealed the truth.
She then turned back to look at her sister, only to see her sister’s eyes shift guiltily away. Her sister tried to change the subject: "Sis, why are you walking so weirdly? Does your stomach still hurt? Mom even added an extra quilt for us."
"Did you drink soda?"
"No! I’m scared of pain!" Her sister shook her head rapidly. "Sis, if your stomach hurts, go to the bathroom! I still have to finish my winter break homework!"
"How about I lend you this hand warmer?" Her sister flatteringly held out the charging hand warmer toward An Han.
But An Han took the hand warmer and placed it on her sister’s lap. "You use it."
"My stomach doesn't hurt anymore."
"Don't you know exactly what you did?"
The younger sister immediately lost her nerve. She pressed the hand warmer against her stomach but continued to argue stubbornly, "I didn't do anything..."
An Han hadn't caught any hard evidence. She peered into the trash can and touched the thermos, confirming it was indeed full of hot water.
But if her sister hadn't done anything, the pain wouldn't have suddenly intensified, would it?
An Han scrutinized her sister’s expression suspiciously, only to suddenly notice the dampness at the tips of her sister's hair.
"Did you wash your hair?"
"I hadn't washed it in days!"
"With cold water?"
"Warm! I’m not stupid!"
An Han pursed her lips and brushed her sister’s hair aside with her palm. Sure enough, while the top layer was dry, most of the hair felt damp and cold to the touch.
This girl... she was too lazy to blow-dry it...
And during a period, it’s generally best not to wash your hair—or at least, you must blow-dry it immediately if you do.
An Han let out a weary sigh. "Did Mom not tell you that it’s best not to wash your hair, or that if you do, you have to dry it?"
"I don't think she said anything? Anyway, I’m fine!"
The urge to smack her sister had started to fade, but upon hearing those words, An Han’s blood pressure spiked instantly.
Seeing the look in An Han’s eyes, the sister suddenly bolted from her chair. The next second, An Han’s palm, swinging toward the back of her head, hit nothing but air.
"Dad! Mom! Big sister is committing murder!"
She screamed and fled the room like a panicked rabbit. An Han tried to give chase, but after only a few steps, she sat down on the foot of the bed with a thud, clutching her abdomen in fury.
"I am never taking a crappy task like this again!"
"When is her period finally going to end~"
She sighed and collapsed backward onto the bed.
Once the task was complete, she would never have to suffer like this again.
