Chapter 227 224. What a Mess in This Family
When Anhan saw her little sister again, the mischievous, somewhat tomboyish girl had transformed into a refined, introverted, shy girl with a flushed, adorable face.
A girl of about ten looks good in any dress.
“Mom! Why is she wearing a long dress?”
But Anhan was still extremely dissatisfied.
“What’s wrong with little girls wearing long skirts?” Her mother glanced at Anhan’s black dress, slightly displeased with the color, but then looked down at the cute little sister and felt completely satisfied. “Let’s go to Grandpa’s house.”
No one knew how much her mother had been troubled by her youngest daughter dressing in a masculine way, yet it was resolved so easily this time.
Anhan’s home wasn’t far from her grandfather’s; walking would take only half an hour.
As before, Anhan sat on the back of the electric bike, her sister stood in front, and her mother rode in the middle, controlling the bike… While overloading like this would be illegal in a big city, no one cared in their small town.
It took only about ten minutes to reach Grandpa’s house by bike.
Still anxious, Anhan worriedly asked her mother while riding:
“How did you explain my situation to Aunties and Uncles?”
Her mother paused before replying, “I just said you’ve become a girl.”
For her mother, Anhan had suddenly turned into a girl while studying at school, but she hadn’t really cared about the reason and was even willing to lie for her.
“Ah?” Anhan panicked a little. “Wouldn’t they think I’m… a human–freak?”
“So how did you become a girl?” her mother asked now.
Anhan hesitated. Not even Supeng would believe the truth about the system, and there was no way her mother would.
“Because… I suddenly realized I was developing,” she said, lowering her head and fiddling with her nails. “Then I went for a checkup and found out my chromosomes are actually female.”
“Is that so?”
Her mother’s tone seemed doubtful.
Anhan paused, thinking hard about how to convince her mother.
“I also get my period…” she murmured, head lowered. “I’m a real girl.”
Her mother didn’t respond immediately, which made Anhan even more nervous. She had been worrying about how to explain her situation all these days, and though her mother had never asked before, it seemed she had assumed Anhan had undergone surgery and was a man-in-woman’s-body. Perhaps her mother hadn’t consciously thought that way, but who knew…
“I…” Anhan found she couldn’t explain anything.
Her mother stopped the bike at a red light. She looked back at the anxious Anhan and smiled gently.
“Don’t worry, I believe you.”
“…”
“Everyone has their own secrets, right?”
Anhan looked up at her mother’s smiling face and nodded blankly.
“I’ll tell them you’ve always been a girl,” her mother said, turning the handlebars again as the bike slowly moved forward. “Maybe it was the hospital or the doctor, or maybe me… Anyway, you were always a girl. The past twenty years were just a dream.”
“If anyone dares to say anything, tell Mom. Don’t be afraid.
Whatever the reason, it’s not your fault, right?”
Anhan lowered her head and hugged her mother’s waist, resting her head on her shoulder.
Though her mother could be overbearing, she was indeed the best.
Her little sister, standing in front, curiously asked, “Mom, what are you talking about?”
“About your sister,” her mother replied with a smile.
Soon, the family arrived at Grandpa’s house. Several electric bikes and cars were already parked at the entrance. Through the open door, Anhan saw a few aunts and uncles sitting on the sofa, while her cousins looked uneasy standing beside it.
Her anxiety spiked again, and she instinctively straightened up, trying to appear like a boy to calm herself.
But before she could enter, the room was already in chaos.
“What are they arguing about?” Anhan asked her mother, who was locking the bike.
“Your eldest uncle’s son wants to date your eldest aunt’s daughter—they’re going to get married.”
“???” Anhan was completely dumbfounded.
“They’re mainly talking about that. You’re just here for the drama,” her mother said, finishing the lock and smiling.
“Isn’t marriage within three generations prohibited?” Anhan asked, confused.
“Her cousin was adopted by your eldest aunt, so it doesn’t count. They’ve even passed the premarital checkups.”
“Ah? This… what…”
“They don’t have time to care about your stuff.”
Her lips twitched as she realized she’d come here just to watch the drama.
What a messy family…
She followed her mother inside. Her footsteps drew everyone’s attention. They all turned toward Anhan, pausing in surprise.
“She’s pretty.”
“Looks just like little sister when she was young.”
“Is this really Anhan?”
“I absolutely don’t agree! If these two get together, what will people think of me!”
Her eldest aunt quickly shifted the topic.
The eldest uncle calmly shook his head, “Why should our generation interfere in young people’s love? I think it’s fine, keeps the family closer.”
Anhan was startled by the tension and awkwardly stood there, unsure of what to do, while her mother joined the debate.
Her attention, however, was drawn to her cousins.
Her eldest cousin, Wu Hao, had always gotten along with her, but now he was apparently “eating grass near home.”
Her cousin had been studying abroad and she barely remembered her, but returning for the holidays stirred up this big mess.
“Cousin…?” Wu Hao cautiously approached Anhan. “What’s going on here?”
“I was going to ask you the same thing…”
“…”
They looked at each other awkwardly, fidgeting with their toes. Anhan blushed and turned her head, suppressing her curiosity about Wu Hao.
Better not hurt each other…
She looked at her cousin, who stood coldly with arms crossed, fidgeting with her sleeves, clearly uneasy.
“Cousin~ are you going to marry her?”
At this moment, her little sister held out some peanuts, asking the most naive but heart-piercing question: “Cousin, can you really get married?”
“…”
Wu Hao, thick-skinned, could only laugh awkwardly. Her cousin’s face turned bright red as she lowered her head, seemingly wanting to hide forever.
“Anhan, come here.”
Anhan, distracted by the drama, heard Grandpa calling from the dining room. Snapping out of her daze, she glanced at her mother, saw her encouraging look, and walked toward the dining room.
No worries, in this chaotic atmosphere, Grandpa probably wouldn’t pay attention to her issues anyway.
