Chapter 209 206. Lunch
With light, brisk steps, An Han walked into the classroom, hugging a thick stack of textbooks. With a bang, she plopped down beside Wang Sheng.
The sound of the books startled him. He looked up in a panic, stared at her face—and froze for a moment.
“You… what’s wrong with you?”
“Studying,” An Han replied casually. “Isn’t the exam coming up?”
She flipped open a textbook at random and began reading and memorizing the marked key points at a pace that looked almost like skimming three lines at once.
“That’s not what I mean… I mean you—don’t you look kind of weird today?”
She glanced at Wang Sheng, confusion in her brows and eyes.
“You’re in a really good mood?”
“Pretty good, I guess~”
Indeed, she looked quite good—there was even a cute lilt at the end of her words.
Wang Sheng lowered his head, but out of the corner of his eye he was secretly observing An Han’s face.
That pretty face seemed unable to suppress its happiness; the corners of her lips were slightly upturned the whole time. She even seemed to be softly humming a tune, her body swaying faintly with the rhythm.
Normally, if An Han showed this level of excitement, it usually meant someone was about to suffer—or already had.
Had something happened? They had only not seen each other for one night.
“Seeing you this happy, did you get a girlfriend?” Chen Junjie sat down beside Wang Sheng just then. As soon as he sat, he shot out his usual sharp-tongued provocation. “Or maybe a boyfriend?”
Long Xing, who had come into the classroom with him, felt his heart skip at those words.
Still, Long Xing was curious as well and glanced toward An Han. First, his eyes were drawn to the huge stack of books in her arms, then to her face, which looked much brighter than usual.
It was as if all the pressure had been unloaded at once, with no more suppression or worries weighing on her heart…
“My mom came to visit me. How could I not be happy?” An Han realized she was being too obvious and restrained her emotions a little, lowering her head to continue reading.
The system’s attribute points usually had something to do with her body, but this time it had randomly assigned Intelligence.
It felt like the system was calling her stupid…
By the literal meaning, the Intelligence attribute should increase IQ, memory, logical thinking, and the like.
An Han didn’t feel as if her brain had undergone some dramatic transformation.
She only felt that memorizing knowledge points seemed easier than before, that she could more easily suppress the feminine mannerisms brought on by her bodily traits, and that her thoughts were clearer…
But in actual effect, it only meant she could memorize a bit faster. It was nowhere near the level of glancing once and remembering everything.
“What a pity.”
It looked like during the four classes this morning, being able to memorize the material for two courses would already be pretty good.
All those books she brought—for nothing.
……
At noon, when classes ended, An Han didn’t wait for her roommates or Su Peng. As soon as the bell rang, she picked up the neatly stacked textbooks and ran straight out of the classroom.
After only a few steps, though, she guiltily slowed down.
“I wonder how she’ll feel after a night has passed.”
Although An Han knew her mother had already accepted the fact that her son had become a daughter, she was still a bit anxious, afraid her mother might act strangely because of it.
Su Peng jogged up behind her. “Why are you running so fast?”
“My mom and sister are probably waiting for me outside the school.”
“Right…” He consciously walked behind her. “Then I—I probably shouldn’t meet your aunt, right?”
“Better not.”
What if it stimulated her mother’s nerves again…
About ten minutes later, An Han arrived at the school gate.
From afar, through the electric gate, she spotted her mother’s slightly frail figure.
She quickened her pace and jogged out of the school, stopping only when she reached her mother. After catching her breath, she looked up at her.
“You’re already a girl, yet you’re still so reckless,” her mother said gently, reaching out to tidy An Han’s messy hair. “Let’s go eat lunch first. After that, can you show us around the campus?”
“Then how about we eat at the school cafeteria?”
Her mother nodded lightly and, holding her sister’s hand, followed An Han inside.
She looked around curiously and, once they were inside the campus, asked, “What about that boy from last night?”
“……”
An Han’s smile instantly stiffened.
She reacted quickly and forced a casual smile. “Last night? You mean Su Peng? He’s my classmate.”
“Seems like you’re quite close to him?”
“Just okay,” An Han quickly downplayed it, not daring to let her mother know about the ambiguous relationship between her and Su Peng. “I ran into him when he was on a blind date last night, so we just took a cab back together.”
Su Peng already has a blind date—he’s not my boyfriend~
“Is that so?”
“Sis, is Su Peng that handsome guy?” her sister asked.
An Han’s cheeks flushed nonstop. Every time she heard her sister address her like that, her head ached with embarrassment.
This was a school. Even though many people already saw her as female, deep down they still thought of her as a man who just happened to be extraordinarily pretty.
Besides, hearing the word “sis” from a sister she had watched grow up—there was really no way to describe that level of shame.
“Sis?”
“At school, don’t call me ‘sis’…” An Han protested softly.
“Sis!”
She immediately locked her arm around her sister’s neck and covered her mouth with her hand, threatening viciously, “Believe it or not, I’ll make you sleep in the bathroom tonight!”
Her sister struggled and whimpered. Their mother turned back to watch the sisters fooling around, a hint of worry appearing between her brows.
“I’m not messing with you anymore!” An Han released her sister and looked toward a three-story building not far away. “That’s the cafeteria. Classes just ended, so there’ll probably be a lot of students—we’ll have to line up.”
She led her family into the cafeteria and found a corner spot. “You two save the seats. I’ll go line up.”
That was what she said, but when she reached the counter and saw the hundred or so people crowded in front of it, An Han immediately chickened out.
There wasn’t even a proper line—everyone was squeezing forward like starving ghosts…
In front of her mother and sister, she subconsciously wanted to act like an adult, even like a man who could support the family.
She instinctively wanted to take care of them, but she herself was timid too.
And acting too rough in front of family wasn’t very appropriate…
An Han scanned the crowd for a thinner spot, when she suddenly noticed a tall figure coming out of the small convenience store connected to the cafeteria.
Their eyes met, and An Han naturally walked over.
“I already ordered takeout,” Long Xing said. Seeing her toothy smile, he instinctively took a step back.
“Brother Long~”
“…Fine.”
Long Xing let out a heavy sigh, rolled up his long sleeves to his biceps, and exposed the ferocious tattoo on his upper arm.
He straightened his back, his face expressionless, exuding an intimidating presence… Wherever he passed, the crowd parted like butter being cut, opening a single-lane path straight to the food counter.
An Han followed behind Long Xing, borrowing his authority like a fox using a tiger’s might.
She could almost feel her sister’s admiring gaze and immediately felt even happier.
“This is how you make enemies…” Long Xing muttered uneasily.
“It’s fine. You weren’t scared during the fitness club recruitment last time—why get scared just buying lunch?”
Long Xing’s already stiff expression stiffened even further.
